Unhappy So my beater is dying a slow death

My DD which is a 1999 Chevy Blazer is dying a slow death. Sounds like a rod is knocking. Oil pressures are all good so I am lost. But nonetheless, it is progressively getting worse.

I added some Lucas Oil Stabilizer to it in hopes that mayb some of the thicker oil can make its way to the spot that needs it.

The engine in it was supposedly around 80k miles when I had it put in, but it is was a crapshoot. This is engine #2. But at 147k miles, the Blazer still has a ton of life left in it if the engine wasn't running out. I really don't want to deal with having to cough up $800 bucks for another junkyard spare. I need to take it to a mechanic to hear their diagnosis, but I believe it is going to be grim. I got about 10k miles out of the engine but on each oil change I was seeing a lot of shavings on the plug.

I am going to try to take tomorrow and look for another beater vehicle to get me to work. The only problem is I have to be slightly picky as I am 6' 6" tall although I am no means fat.

I had to get the motor in my '96 Blazer replaced because of the same thing. At 117k the intake gasket blew and I got it fixed and then out of nowhere at 123k the motor started knocking like a jackhammer. I drove it to work and back for about a week like that until one day it just lost oil pressure and shut off. I was able to get it started and drove it to a friends garage.

I bought a junkyard motor for $750 that supposedly had 86k on it but when I went back to that junkyard for more parts off the same truck I saw that it had 113k. That motor burned a little oil but ran ok. I had a friend put it in and all together it cost me $1400 to get it up and running again.

About a month later at 125k the transmission started slipping and blowing fluid out. I decided at that point I couldnt afford to put any more money into the truck so I was going to trade it in. While looking for a new car the heater core blew.

That doesnt even count the steering issues, abs issues and a bunch of other problems.

I ended up trading it in on a brand new Hyundai Elantra which was a great car and I traded that in on my F150 when I decided I wanted a truck.

Bottom line- Blazers are crap.

Really though why do you need a beater when you have an '06 F150? Just drive that.
A Blazer doesnt get much better mileage anyway. Mine got 13-18 mpg and my F150 gets 13-15.

Wife drives the truck to work. I would glady take it to work, but due to the lime and other particulate fallout (I work at a mill) my paint and glass would take a pounding. That is why I prefer a beater vehicle so it doesn't really matter what happens to it.

Yeah, those Blazers are crap. Buddy had one... tranny started going out, then he blew an intake gasket and toasted the motor. Then another buddy bought one... I helped him change the spark plugs a few weeks ago... or 5 of the 6. You have to remove the steering shaft to get at one of them.

I had a 1997 Blazer... it would randomly fall into 4WD while driving at HIGHWAY SPEEDS!!! If you didn't have your seatbelt on, it'd throw you through the windshield. I'm surprised that a piston didn't fly through the block and then through the hood into the air...

It didn't just redline -- it PEGGED the tach for about 4 seconds before it'd even begin to register again...

I traded that POS very quickly -- got a 1998 Explorer and the rest is history. I really doubt I'll ever go back to Govmt' Motors.

I didnt pull the steering shaft on my brother's '95 S10 to change the plugs. I just had to use a few different spark plug tools.

Mine didnt get changed until the motor got replaced.

Good luck, bud... and, I've seen the guy at one of our meets. He's a tower. LOL! Let me know if I can help out -- although, I have no idea about the knock and shavings on the plug -- you're right, that doesn't sound good.

Back in highschool a buddy had a Blazer... and he got it with like 96k on it... and it fell apart on the highway.

Everytime I think of a Blazer... I think of it on fire.

You can call the S-10 Blazer crap if you like but I won't anymore. My girl had a 2004 model and she got rear ended in it. She was sitting at a traffic light when she got hit by a Neon doing 75 mph. The gal that hit her never touched the brakes. It killed 2 other folks in the Neon. The Blazer lost the engine, transmission, rear axle, and the only part of the truck still intact was the drivers seat. She had back injurys but nothing catastrophic. But there was nothing left of the Blazer including the dashboard. Even the radio wouldn't work anymore. I guess the worst part was she was getting over an accident with her boy friend. They were sitting at a light and got in a head on wreck in his F-150 FX4. Folded the FX4 up too. Not much chance of an F-150 against a drunken driver in a Peterbilt. Thankfully, she hasn't been in anymore wrecks.

As far as a DD, Turd, you might look at a Focus. One of my girls has one and I fit in it pretty comfy and I'm 6'4"+. I've been in it for several hundred miles at a time and was not cramped. I have to back in to get into it but otherwise, it has been a fabulous ride. Hard to beat 31-34 mpgs town driving and 41-44 hiway. She is a conservative driver like the ol' man. If yer looking for a replacement econobox, the Focus is hard to beat.

Yea, the S-10 Blazer is hard to beat, but I'd give it everything I've got with a really big stick... more like a club! What a piece if garbage! I've never owned one but have known some who have and the story is always the same. Drove GM for many years and also worked for 'em. Last Gubmint Motors vehicle was a beautiful Caprice I bought in '85 for my wife. Some of the finest JUNK on the planet. That was the end of a long line of GM for me and I never looked back. Truly amazing cars... amazing they've stayed in business long enough for Nobama to buy 'em with our counterfit dollars.

If you want a beater that will fit your big ***, look for something like my truck. The book value on OBS 4.2 F-150's is pretty low and as long as it's not an early one with the bad intake gaskets it will run forever.
