Anti-virus software

Well, my Zone Labs ran out, and I was without antivirus for about 3 days until I got a crazy virus. I didn't even download anything except for windows updates, that I got from going to the windows website. Other then that, just got on facebook a couple times, as the holidays have been busy.

As it sits, I can't even turn it on without it popping up with "windows" virus scan software. I know all that is a scam. It really is bad though. I can't do anything on it.

So, my question is, does anyone have a good recommendation for a free antivirus, spyware, software? Needing something that can kick this bug, so I can get back to scanning F150 on my laptop.

computers is my bussiness you have what alot of other people are having, it is a fake virus scanner that is trying to con you into paying a fee so it will fix your computer. DO NOT DO THIS. Go to safe mode by pressing F8 when you first turn the computer on select safe mode with networking and get on the internet and go to malwarebytes.org and down load the free trial and then scan the computer, it will show the virus more than likely, If it dont find it in safe mode boot to windows and as soon as windows start click the malware bytes and do a quick scan and it will get rid of it, malwarebytes will classify it as a fake alert trojan and will completely remove it. I have customers come in everyday with this virus. good luck, also you can download avast free antivirus and when you install it will ask you to do a boot time scan on next start up and when it does it will take it away. GOOD LUCK

FREE antivirus is not junk, people that think it is junk is a computer novice, there are some damn good free programs out that work great. Avg 9.0 anti virus, Avast Antivirus, Avira AntiVirus, Malwarebytes just to name a few. There are some good free software out there

I've been using clam-win for a few years on all 5 of my computers. 0 problems with critters and it is small and lightweight. I actually tend to think some of the free offerings are better as they are not as bloated with stuff.

Awesome, thanks. I will try some of those. Only problem is computer won't even load up in safe mode. When I try, it starts, then a warning pops up saying the computer is infected, or something similiar, and tells me to run an anti spyware program. So I'm guessing I caught a good one.

I'm glad your a computer genius...congratulations. I would not disagree that some of the free programs would work fine in this situation. The fact of the matter is the FREE programs are FREE for a reason...to market their product. FREE programs tend to be limited in their function and do not offer the tech support that might be needed. You can find affordable software that will fit your needs and provide you the protection your system needs, but remember folks I'm just a NOVICE according to geek squad.

Yup your a novice! Now get your panties out of a wad, there are people like you that think nothing is good that is free and that everyone should buy the most expensive item for it to be worth a crap, im just telling you that there are alot of free programs that are actually better then the ones you can buy, ive seen avg antivirus pick up virus' that norton and mcafee didnt catch, but i guess that doesnt matter since the free stuff is junk. Happy New Year

Are you saying it wont boot up at all in safe mode? If you can get in safe mode that virus scanner would not be there. I think what is happening is that when you try to get into safe mode it restarts and boots into regualr windows. If thats the case its going to be hard if the virus has disabled safe mode.

I try to boot in safe mode, and it takes me to that black screen, and asks which method of safe mode. After I pick, it then comes to a blue screen and says that windows can not continue due to corruption I believe. Then it recommends I run an antispyware program to rid the virus, or something like that.

I'll have to agree with KingRanch. I used to have Norton's, and it sucked compared to a free one I used to run. That was a different cpu though. Been running ZA on my laptop for years, and never had a problem. But, recent change made me have to take it off. 2 days later, BOOM, VIRUS!!!

My laptop is running norton, and I've been having some issues lately. Last night I ran a completes scan, and it found some spy ware Trojan. I click on the remove button and it did something.
But I've been having connection speed problems at work and at home. At work I have 6 meg download speed, and when I'm lucky it will run at 2 meg.
At home I have Cable lynx, I think I'm paying for 4 meg download, for about a week I'm lucky is I get 140k.
I'm beginning to wonder if there is not a problem with the net itself, if that is possible.
