did at&t start something they can't finish?
I personally hate touch screens so rule that out of the equation. Secondly, I will not use Android. The Google ToS scare me, I will not sell my soul to a company for marketing rights. I personally prefer a Symbian OS on a physical keyboard and can not stand bloatware. For this reason I buy my phones unlocked and am free to do as I please. When I travel to Europe I use my VodaPhone SIM card. When I was in South Africa I was a VodaCom customer. In the US I find AT&T to provide the best service for my needs.
Back to the OP, really, who cares? If you signed up for an unlimited contract, A&TT will have to honor that. It sounds like they won't be offering that option much longer, so when your contract expires you'll probably end up paying significantly more for an unlimited plan, or you'll be capped somewhere.
I use my iPhone a lot and last month I only used 500mb of data. I think most people will be able to manage with 5gb cap just fine.
FATHERFORD: How much data did you use last month? You can sign on to att.com and look at your bill. Near the end there should be a total for data used.

Edited too add: My wife and I share an AT&T plan with 550 anytime minutes. Since in-network calls are free, we don't pay to talk to each other and many of our friends have iPhones, so we don't pay to talk to them either. Add in free nights and weekends, and in the past 4 months we've rolled over 1781 minutes. We also both have 1500 txt messages/mo and usually come nowhere near that limit. We're paying just under $150/mo.

Sprint used to be the same way you werent charged for calling or recieving calls from other sprint users, they just switched it about 2 months ago where you aren't charged for calling or recieving calls from any mobile phone on any network. I like the Iphone I just couldn't make myself pay that much to have one, several of my friends have them and they were telling me there is a specific charge monthly for what they called an Iphone subscription, is that correct? They charge you every month just to have an Iphone?

I just went and made my exact plan on at&t website with a bberry instead of the iphone just like I have with sprint, and it came out like 261.00. They make you pay for everything, which I guess if you just want a basic plan works out well, but if you want a bunch of features it starts adding up fast.

AT&T needs to worry about their service, not this crap. I don't live out in the middle of nowhere, but I have at least 2 failed calls a day due to no service.
No service in any building except my house. Barely ever had service in Cape May, NJ. Drove down 95 to GA, had barely any service the last 2 hours. I drive to the gym, no service on the road the gym is on. Cloud in the sky, no service.
I hope every day that Verizon will pick up the Iphone so I can see AT&T fail.
Fastest 3g network, whooptie doo. It's only the fastest if you have a freaking signal.
I literally HATE AT&T and would switch to verizon right now if I wasn't in a contract. I was christmas shopping today, and I had to walk out of the store, (like always) to call someone and ask about a present. Unreal.

I rarely have a problem with my AT&T service. Unless I'm way out of town it works great. When I'm on the Edge network it kinda sucks, data is slow and I drop calls occasionally.
I liked Verizon better, but when my wife and I wanted to combine plans and get a new contract Verizon wanted to charge me $1000 for 2 BB Storms and were completely unwilling to work with us at all. So we went and got iPhones that afternoon.

^ I generally have great service. Now that I got my new phone, I get even better service. But it depends on where your at too. Some places Alltel gets better service, and some places AT&T gets better service.
Sounds like you're a tech dork. 99% of people don't use their phones the way you do, plus you have some weird personal issues like hating touch screens. I'm guessing you have "fat fingers"?

How are you only paying 150, is that for 2 iPhones? I'm on the lowest minute plan, 2 iPhones and unlimited texting (which is only $10 more than 1500) and I'm paying right at 200.
