I have been an educator for 33 years, and summer vacation should be shortened. Summer vacation came about due to the fact that we were an agrarian society, and kids were needed to do the work on the farm. It is, for the most part, no longer the case. I would rather have school year round with a few week or two-week breaks in between grading periods---more material could be covered and less time wasted. Classes could meet during the summer and students could graduate earlier if they wish; more time spent learning and less time spent reviewing at the beginning of each school year.

As it is now, the kids are out of school 2 to 2 1/2 months... do we want what is best for the kids and what is best for our society?

How 'bout a month off in the summer---take your vacations then...this two-month or two and a half month layoff could be eliminated

Track schooling as it is called here in vegas is not that bad. We took 2 smaller vacations on his breaks and it was nice. They did however, revert to the traditional school year this year 09-10 and my son is acually bothered by it. He was on a 8 week on 1 week off schedule but now he just has the normal breaks and holidays.

I don't think Washington DC should have any say whatsoever in whether a LOCAL school district decides to have year round schools, long summer vacations or short summer vacations.

Who are you kidding? It'll cost a fortune for a family to go on vacation with every family in the nation having only a month with which to make reservations at popular vacation destinations.

That idea is a joke!!!

Schools have been going towards this for years. I know Las Vegas has done it for several years, my cousin is a teacher out there. Around here the schools start back a little bit earlier every year.
