Selective Service

Is it still mandatory for males that turn 18 to register for selective service? I havnt ever heard of it until today. My grandma asked me if we still had to. All throughout high school and now at Texas A&M no one has ever mentioned it. I found this website http://www.sss.gov/Default.htm and it says you are supposed to sign up for it. Hmmm....

YES! I just had to do it. Without it, you cannot get financial aid for college, you cannot get a goverment job, and a number of other things! DO IT

Way back in the day, when I registered to vote at 18 at the post office, They also did the selective service registration.

Also got the confirm letter when Desert Storm was going on. They draft take up to 32 now I think ( was 42 before the Military stand down in JAN of this year ).

I like this little addition :

June 22 - September 11, 2009

President Obama has announced a nationwide service initiative, "United We Serve." This initiative is the beginning of a sustained, collaborative, and focused effort to meet community needs and make service a way of life.

The President encourages Americans to visit www.serve.gov to find and create service projects in their communities, share stories about projects they're working on.
Almost sounds like compulsory service like other countries have.
Wait for it kids, coming to a country near you soon, compulsory service building houses with Jimmy Carter.

So do you not like giving back to your country? I do my part as a Volunteer Fire Fighter and I'm damned proud to do what I can.

I, like SSCULY, was signed up for selective service when I regestered to vote, at age 18.

See any difference?

Volunteer Fire Fighter.

Compulsory service.

See any difference?

As far as I know, registering for Selective Service is still required.

Here is Obama's plan for 'universal voluntary service' straight from the campaign:

http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/Natio...nFactSheet.pdf

Looks like college students will have a 100 hour per year requirement, with 50 hours per year for junior high and high school students.

Hopefully Raptor's volunteer fire department service qualifies as acceptable service to the Executive Branch. Might depend if he is in a county or precinct that votes Democrat.

This plan is intended to 'allow' all Americans to serve. I wonder if the youth can subsititute indoctrincation hours for actual service hours?

Yep. HUGE difference between being a firefighter and compulsory enlistment.

Okay, so what you (or Obama) is saying is that we HAVE to volunteer in something?

I'll go hand my 100-hour volunteer time card in TODAY of so. But I just wonder how this is going to hold up with minorities and the female (daddy's little girl) population in general.

Right now it is a "should".
There were talks about compulsory peace corps service after HS and before college. This would be a peace corps "draft" as it were.
Guess this is how he was going to fix unemployment, if the new HS grads are not in the job market ( due to 18 to 24 months of service ) they could not be counted with the unemployment numbers.
Same compulsory service other countries have, but non military.

As with any compulsory service program, there will always be favoritism, and special treatment to those select few.
They would get the office gopher jobs in their home town, and most of the time be no-show jobs. Remember the pres is from the home of the no show job

I was 18 in 1981 and had to register for the selective service... I was told of it thru by my HS counselor as I recall.... I did it before I registered to vote, but I do recall them asking me about the SS (ha, ha, now that's ironic, huh??) and I showed them my registration info...

For as how long the current 'conflicts' have been going on and they still have not initiated the 'draft', I don't know what other 'conflict' would invoke one??

Just do it and feel good about it because you are an American and if it comes up during your eligibility time, then that's just the way it goes..... The American lifestyle is not a right, it's a privilege.... Lots of Americans gave the ultimate sacrifice for what we enjoy today, so be proud that you can be a part of that...

Yes, everyone is required to register at 18. I believe it can be done at the post office.

As for mandatory public "service", Maryland already has that for anyone who wants to get their high school diploma. They have to do something like 40 hours. As a Democratic state, I have always wondered how they could be so liberal, but want enforced slavery.

It may be just my opinion, but I think mandatory service should be put in place. Not only could it help many many people right out of high school by giving them some kind of skills, but it would also would straighten a lot of the dumbasses and punks who think they're all that and a bag o chips.

You'd get to choose your branch, and MOS... other than that, 2 yrs.

I've had a few friends over the years, both in and out of the Corps that served in and with the Israeli forces and they all say the same thing. Israeli forces are squared away, water tight, sh*t don't stink ****'s. This is true for their female members just as much as their male members. I've also seen first hand how the Israeli's train... they are top notch, and it's a good thing they're our allies... cause they'd kick our asses.

Good points, but IMO it would not work the same here as it does in Israel.

There, the message is national survival. Here, IMO, the message would be indoctrination about the benefits of big government.

For people that need skills and straightening out, they can already volunteer for the military.
