There, the message is national survival. Here, IMO, the message would be indoctrination about the benefits of big government.
And I agree. Which is why it's painfully obvious that nothing like this would ever happen in the US. However, there may be a day when our "national survival" depends on something like this.

But they won't. Before I went into the Corps I was one of these kids walkin around with a chip on my shoulder, headed for prison or the grave. When I graduated from PI and looked back only 3 months before, I realized just how effed up I was and how much the Corps straightened me out.

The United States of America is about freedom to do and say what you want (to an extent)... but it is the laws and thoughts we have incorporated over the years that have also given people the thought that they are not obligated to "give back", and if anyone suggests they do, they're "dirty Dems".

Like I said, I know it'll never happen, but it's a thought.

Nobody said they're "dirty dems", they have just said that anything made compulsory is anti-American.

The draft, mandatory community service, etc., is against what this country was founded on.

It's federal law to register. Course they already know when you turn 18 since you have a SSN and registered birth certificate.

American Opportunity Tax Credit. This fully refundable credit will ensure that the
first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of
tuition at the average public college or university. Recipients of this credit will be required to conduct 100 hours
of public service a year, either during the school year or over the summer months.

The 100 hours for college is only if you want the $4000 tax credit

But yes selective service is still required.
