Thumbs up Tiger Woods!

Hey guys, I was just wondering if I was the only person on this forum that played golf? Did anyone see Tiger tear it up this weekend? People are saying that he achieved the greatest accomplishment of any professional sport. What do you guys think? I agree with that.

Cool

It's hard to argue with 4 titles due to the fact that nobody else even has a reference point !!! He's Da' man.

An awesome accomplishment! I have to admit, though, I was rooting for Phil. I always go for the underdog, which means I don't root for Tiger too often, I guess!

Old School golfers had to be wincing at the Green Jaket ceremony...a black man putting the jacket on another black man! Bunch of stoggy ol' farts gnashing their teeth!

Tiger has taken the golf world to new levels! David Duval made it interesting.

Today's local paper selected him as the pick for the 10 greatest individual sports feats. This put him right up there with: Mark McGuire (70HR), Lance Armstrong (2xTour de France), Nadia Comaneci ('76 Olympics), Secretariat (Triple crown), Mark Spitz ('72 Olympics), Bob Beamon (long jump record 29'2.5"), Wilt Chamberlin (100 point game), Joe DiMaggio (56 game hitting streak) and of course Jesse Owens.

What an exciting time for the world of golf. Whodathunk beating that little ball into a hole would be so danged exciting!

What about Michael Jordan? He is without a doubt, the biggest name in sports history. Tiger is a great golfer, but his name will never be above MJ's.

I agree mudder, MJ, in my opinion, is the worlds greatest athlete of ALL time. Remember though, these were The 10 Greatest Individual Sports Feats. I think the list is appropriate.

Here's my take on the issue:

Tiger Woods is an incredible golfer. The things this guy does are incredible. There is virtually no ***** in the armor, under pressure he excels. However, I don't like him for the fact that he is ****y and doesn't pay homage to the tradition of golf. To me, golf is steeped with tradition and is essentially a gentleman's game. I think he would come across better if he would just show a little humility. I don't believe the old guys at the National are bent out of shape because he's black, I believe it is because he doesn't have the image that past champions have (i.e. tradition, gratitude etc) I live in Augusta, so I know the Augusta National prides itself on these things. That's what gives it it's character, exclusiveness, mystique and it's aura. As far as Tiger's slam goes, I don't believe it's a Grand Slam, however I do believe it is incredible.

murfster,

you are correct.

Tiger just dominates the game of golf like no other, and I guess that upsets some people. He makes golf worth watching. I use to like Fred Couples, and others, but they are just not as good anymore. Like I said, El Tigre, just dominates.

Hey wemjr!

I have to disagree with your assessment of Mr. Woods. There is no one on the PGA Tour (or LPGA or Senior Tour) more in touch with the history/tradition of the game of golf than Tiger Woods. He is well-educated in its history, rules and tradition.

I have never seen him show anything but deference to the game's greats (either living or dead).

He may be a bit headstrong, but have you ever seen an old interview with Jack or Arnold? Players at the top of their games usually have that certain image of self. It's what puts them at the top to begin with.

There are some things I don't like about Tiger (most of it has to do with the press, not him), but I think over all, he is more a plus to the game than a drawback.

Just my opinion. I'm more a Phil Mickleson fan.

wemjr,

Until a few years ago Augusta National was so proud of itself that there were no black members!!! That is why the comment was made.

I have been playing golf since I was 5. My high school team took 1st in the state championships and 3rd another year. I played 3 years in college and then decided I had to study if I wanted to be an engineer. My brother is a Class A pro (played in the Buick Classic last year and I caddied for him) and my mom is a pro shop manager so I have a little insight into the golfing world.

I think it is great what Tiger has done for golf. Kids think it's cool to play golf and he is helping inner city youths play when they would not have the chance before.

I live in the Orlando area and hear a lot about what he does for the game of golf and it is a lot more than some of the biggest names in golf have ever done.

I do not see anything that he does that is not like a gentelman. He respects the game and the PGA but the PGA can be a bunch of stuffed shirts at times. He and the other young guys on tour are taking golf to the next level.

What do you expect him to do when he sinks a put to win? Not show any emotion? He loves the game and the only reason he plays is to win.

Just my 2 cents!

I think the greatest sports accomplishment ever is Lance Armstrong coming back from near death from cancer and winning the Tour De France 2 years in a row (99-00). While hitting the little white ball is a finesse sport, it is hardly strenuous.

Again, I think that he is the greatest athlete of all time. At his age, he is playing better golf than Nicklaus was in his prime. Jack did have 18 majors however, but Tiger is just beginning. I wouldn't be surprised to see him succeed in breaking every record ever made in the history. I was rooting for Phil for a while because he is the no. 2 player in the world and hasn't won a major yet. I think it's his turn, but he has to EARN it by beating Tiger. Maybe it's because I am a golf freak and love the game so much that I think that he is the greatest.

There is no doubt he is very good but, I don't agree with the press coverage he gets. A short while ago he was in 14th place after[I think] 2 days in a tournament and in our sports section they listed all players to the 14th spot with his picture. Does the first place player not count? The leader after 2 days in the masters was presented as a no name and then they proceed to show every hole Tiger played. Why is the first place player not known? Do you suppose it might have something to do with his coverage? I realize that is not his fault, but you start to want others to win just to make the press look bad. Just my 2 cents. Go Phil.

Well, the fact is, people want to see Tiger. People go to watch him, and they want to see his name on the leaderboard, or they EXPECT to see his name on the leaderboard. The companies that sponsor the tounament get a lot of money because people want to see the top players win. They go and watch just to see Tiger, so the tv stations want to give the people what they want. I admit, DiMarco did have a great 2 days, he can't compete. They show Tiger when he's not in first place because they know that he has a very good chance of coming back and getting into first place. I know that if I were at the top of the leaderboard I would want a lot of attention, and they do give it to them, but they know that nobody ever really gets a lead on Thursday and keeps it until Sunday. It's mostly to give the people what they want, but still, that guy is incredible!

Whoa! Greatest Athlete of ALL time?? I don't put him in that category. OK, he get's the props for one of the greatest Golfers of ALL time, but not greatest Athlete.
That title is reserved for only a very select few. Michael Jordan is one of those few. In my opinion, that title still belongs to only one person: Jim Thorpe. How about him being world class in: track, football, boxing, swimming and golf? How about the 1912 Olympic Gold medal in decathlon/pentathlon?

No, give Tiger his due as a great golfer, but don't put him in the Greatest Athlete of all time.
