btr,

Just because you don't have to be 7' tall or 350 pounds does not mean it is not a sport. I am 6'-1", 180 pounds and I bet I could hit my drives farther than most professional athletes in other sports.

Golf is 95% mental and 5% physical. It is one of the purests sports in the true sense. There is nobody but yourself out there and nobody to blame when something goes wrong.

I do agree that it is not that phisically demanding but I bet you ride in a cart when you play golf, don't you?? Try walking 18 holes 5-6 days per week in all sorts of weather.

Also, in golf if you have a bad couple of months you don't get a paycheck and you are playing year 'round. In basketball, baseball and football you can collect a million dollar paycheck for sitting there and never playing.

I played all sports in high school and enjoyed golf by far because it was an individual game and it was all up to me whether I won or lost. That is a sport in my mind.

Tiger is a great athlete. Why do you think Nike has him? They were quoted in saying that they want THE TOP ATHLETE IN THE WORLD and that is why they signed Tiger. That is why they had Jordan.

Right, sorry guys. Meant to say greatest GOLFER of all times. Not saying thathe sin't a great athlete. Sorry about that, that's a hard point to achieve. Right now, with all of the other sports, he is the greatest athlete, but I don't think of all times.

Greatest athlete of all time???? Don't make me laugh! Maybe the greatest golfer of all time, but he will still have to win for a few more years to take that title away from Jack and Arnold.

Golf is barely rated a sport. It's slightly ahead of bowling, curling, and chess.

Tiger Woods has great golf skills, but he couldn't carry the jockstrap of M. Jordan, M. Johnson, Thorpe, Ali, Gretsky, Carl Lewis, Babe Ruth, Pele . . . and hundreds of football players.

By the way golfers don't even wear a jockstrap. Heck, they usually don't even break a sweat.

I've played a lot of different sports and I golf. I know why, when people get too old to participate in real sports, they golf.

That might be true for the struggling pro, but not for the big names in golf. They take more endorsements than any other sport. Most of them are walking billboards.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Mark Steinberg, Woods' chief agent with the International Management Group, has been known to say that his client, "makes a million dollars a day, whether he plays or not."</font>
Bad arguement. The guy is a virtual endorsement engine.

More...?? The next quote is going to be his annual endorsements:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">THE MONEY MACHINE
Tiger Woods' annual endorsement list, when the new Nike contract begins.
Nike...................... $20 million
General Motors..............$6 million
EA Sports.................. $6 million
Asahi Beverages............ $6 million
American Express..........$5.2 million
Titleist.................... $2 milion
TLC Laser Eye.............. $2 million
Rolex.................... $1.4 million
CBS SportsLine..............$1 million
Total....................$49.6 million
(In addition to the new Disney contract, Woods also gets about $5 million from Warner Books, Wheaties and Golf Digest, with some proceeds going to the Tiger Woods Foundation.

I'm at a loss as to this Tiger as a "Great Athlete" stuff. I want to see him play baseball or basketball or something first. He does have great eye-hand coordination, though; that usually translates well. They say he can bench press 300 pounds. I'd have to see that first, also.

They say you'll walk five miles during a round of golf. I don't see that as being too strenuous for a man in his prime, especially when you have a caddie lugging around the dang bag. I don't buy the golf is strenuous stuff.

I LOVE golf. I play all the time, but it just isn't a sport in the same vein as baseball, football, etc.

The thing I DO love about it, it's a game of character. You play against yourself. You keep your own score and call your own penalties. It seems like in the other sports, people look for ways to break the rules. Golf has a lot more integrity.

Talking

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Tiger Woods would beat M. Jordan by a couple of strokes in a round of golf, but Jordan would cream Woods in a game of one on one (and probably just about every other sport).</font>

Can you see this?? "Say Mike, you up for a 'lil 1on1?" OMG, that would be funny to see. MJ has a pretty serious game of golf himself, all Tiger needs is a ho-hum day to get beat in golf against MJ.
1on1 in basketball? MJ would have to be in a darned coma with his legs and hands tied to get beat by Tiger.

Let's just congratulate Tiger at his Grand Slam and give him the respect of one of the all-time greatest golfers in the world. But please, let's not put him on the pedestal of being in the Worlds Greatest Athlete.

Oh, and I am a Tiger fan... I am not a David Duval fan (even if he graduated from GT).

btr,

I was just trying to defend golf as a sport. I live in the golf mecca of the world (Central Florida). You live in North Dakota. I wouldn't expect you to understand.

I guess the next thing you are going to say is that Nascar racing is not a sport and professional wrestling is a sport.

Just because you go out and pull a cart around doesn't mean you know anything about the demands placed on a PGA tour player. I have been on the other side of the ropes caddying for my brother at the Buick Classic and I can bet you that most weekend golfers like yourself could not handle playing a pro-am on Tuesday, practice round on Wednesday the 4 rounds on Thur-Sun.

Most people would be both mentally and phsically burned out.

And it is not how I define a sport. Here is the actual definition from Webster's: a source of diversion, physical activity engaged in for pleasure

Here is the definition of an athlete: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina

I would call Golf a sport and Tiger an athlete.

By the way, Tiger would beat Jordan by at least 10 strokes on even an average day. Jordan is a 7-8 handicap on his best day.

Easy there Blue...it's not that big of a deal to start flaming folks. It's just a game for most people, not a way of life.

Just telling it the way it is. It really hacks me off when people think golf is not a "real" sport just because you do not run or jump or catch a ball.

I guess it's just all those years of frustration coming out. It's all good. Just having a friendly debate online.

To each their own, I guess.

Here are some facts about Tiger. I am going to go play golf...lol

- Sports Illustrated selected Woods as 1996 Sportsman of the Year
- He was chosen as ESPY Male Athlete of the Year in 1997 (tied with Ken Griffey, Jr.),1999 and 2001.
- The Associated Press chose Woods as the Male Athlete of the Year for 1997 and 1999. . He was only the fifth golfer ever selected, following Gene Sarazen (1935), Nelson (1944-45), Hogan (1953) and Lee Trevino (1971), then became only the seventh man -- and the second golfer -- to earn the award twice since it was begun in 1931. The others were Nelson, Don Budge, Sandy Koufax, Carl Lewis, Joe Montana and Michael Jordan, who won three times.
- The founding members of the World Sports Academy, in voting for the Laureus Sports Awards, also selected Tiger as 1999 World Sportsman of the Year.

The Male Athlete of the Year award at the ESPY's is an award for all athletes. I guess people who say golfers are not athletes must know more about sports than ESPN and the Associated Press.

Just wanted to back my claims up with some facts.

Off to the links....fore!!

Alright guys, there are obviously 2 different sides here. Myself, I am on the highschool golf team, and consider myself to be good. Whoever said that MJ could go out and play Tiger and only get beat by a couple of strokes, well....When you're playing golf, you have no TEAM to rely on. Sure, the way I play, you have a team, but they can't get substituted out if they get tired, or if they aren't having the greatest day, or if they get sick. You have to play. You have to have the mind to play, and you have to have the skill. True, Tiger wouldn't be able to compete with MJ on a court because that isn't his sport. I'm not saying that he could if that were his sport, because nobody would be able to, I'm just sayin that he would be able to compete better if he practiced all of the time. Tiger came into the golf world and showed the people something that they have never seen before: someone who's young, can hit the ball a LONG ways, and someone that can follow up with his shortgame and iron play, not to mention that he hasn't even hit his prime yet. Even though there is no possible way to MASTER the game, he is close enough that he is almost flawless. Everyone has flaws in everything they do, but Tiger can compensate for his mistakes. If he makes a bogie on a hole, he will come back and birdie the next 2. To play golf you have to be an athlete, you have to be smart, you have to be risky in some scenarios, and you have to have skill. BlueFlareside, I'm with you 100% man!

Yea, and chess is 99.9% mental and .1% physical. Pure sport in the true sense. Fishing is ... Sporting clays is ... I guess it just comes down to your individual definition of 'sport'.

I never take a cart, but I do have a pull cart for my bag. Now that you've brought it up, those great golf athletes don't even carry/pull thier own bags! So basically, they take 4 hours to WALK less than five miles (450 yards X 18 / 5,280 = 4.6). Oh, I forgot that they swing a club less than 40 times (putting doesn't count).

What the heck does this have to do with golfer being great athletes?

I also enjoy golf, but even though I am a better golfer than when I was in High School/College, I DO NOT consider myself a better athlete.

Tiger is a great GOLF athlete. Nike wants the top athlete in every sport. Remember those 'battle of the superstars' where they would have the best athletes compete in a bunch of different events for points? How would Tiger do? Don't get me wrong, I think Tiger is great, but I think it is B.S. to call him the greatest athlete. Tiger Woods would beat M. Jordan by a couple of strokes in a round of golf, but Jordan would cream Woods in a game of one on one (and probably just about every other sport).
