Question CVS OR WALMARTS JOB STARTS MONDAY WHICH ONE?

both jobs have been offered to me. cvs is a manager job 6 weeks training 15 miles away- then some where in the district close to home making 3000.00 less than walmarts ( cvs has very good health insurance) walmarts is a 17 week training period about 30miles away 3000.00 more than cvs but much poorer benefits double the cost of medical benefits i have been told. after the 17 weeks training i will be at least but no more 1 hour away from home as a assistant manager. What is the better job and does any one work at these places?? i do have a family and i am very much a family man. I do have to take one of the 2 jobs starting monday.

Go with CVS so you can hook up with a Pharmacist chick!

I would lean towards CVS.
3000 is what $1.50 per hour?

1) The Walmart commute is an extra 30 miles, that will tack an hour per day of 'your' time and cut into that $1.50.

2) Health benefits will clean up the rest of the $1.50

3)The 'training' program is only 6 weeks opposed to 17 weeks.

4)Title, Manager opposed to ***. Manager

p.s.
I've heard of Walmart but, I don't know what CVS is, so if it's something bad,... nevermind.

I'm a bit unclear.

If it's $3k a month difference, go with the higher pay and you can afford to supplement the health plan benefits on your own.

If it's $3k a year, go with the one that gives better benefits. The bottom line will actually be better.

I was presented with a similar (I think) situation a few months back. Was offered a job at Duke Energy for about $3/HR more than what I was making at the time. Duke had only a single PTO account, vice regular sick leave and annual leave, sorry insurance, and no other perks like employee computer purhcase, etc. I have a little girl, so I stayed with my present employer. They've been VERY family friendly all along, and recently rewarded me with a raise which brought my base pay over and above what Duke was offering. Look at the whole picture and put your family first if you have one.

Cool

I assumed it was 3k per year.
If it was 3k per month it would be a no brainer.
That would be 36k per year!
Shoot if I made 36k per year, I'd move out of my neighborhood and make everybody call me 'Emperor' or 'Your Highness'

no wait...'Money Bags' that's it 'Money Bags' slightly understated, yet hip and way cool.

Anyone who remembers, my other job, I went to 90 stores in 2 days, and dealt mostly with managers.
Some of the CVS managers were cool, others were over worked, so I think it depends on your attitude as far as which one will make you happier. How does your happiness come in to play when it is your family that will benefit from the money? I'll tell ya, you have to go home when you are done, and if your job has you bringing it home with you, it isn't worth it.
So if I get this right, option 1 is:
Train for 17 weeks 30 mi away to be only an assistant manager (lotta grunt work and little control over situation) for 3k more?
Option 2 is: Train for 6 weeks, drive for 15 minutes to be a real manager with better benefits for 3k less?
I bet after making that long drive every day for awhile, you'd be willing to pay 3k for avoid it.

just to clarify what i said before

cvs is the largest drug store chain in the country
i would be making 3k more a year at walmarts as a asst. manager

at this time i am leaning toward walmarts because if i need time off ( i need of a day next week to go to the doctor lets say) at cvs i may only have my self and 2 other people if i am lucky to open and close the store- at walmarts i can ask off and have 6 to 10 people to cover my not being at the store.
any other comments i will listen to

again i start monday at 2/26/01 at 8am

I don't know if can but with the job offer I have, I went "snooping" around asking questions on how people feel working for the company, etc... It helps to know a few people.

Well if you take CVS, hire Cowlady But which ever you choose, I wish you the best of luck!

I have had the opportunity to do both positions in my retail management career. I was a store manager for rite-aid, and it is true that you do have a limited amount of employee coverage. also the responsibilities as store mgr. are much, much greater.you are responsible for every aspect in operating that store, from daily reports, banking inventory(ordering and stocking) hiring and firing of staff, covering shifts when short staffed. also as your store sales go so does your budget for employee hours, slow store and you could be behind the register. Now as wal-mart goes, basicly everything I have mentioned above is handled by someone. someone does the reports, someone does the banking, someone does the hiring, etc. and it could be you at some time. But it is a great feeling knowing that there are plenty of staff around to cover any situation.only draw back is that you are salary and you are required to work long hours posibily 60hrs/wk,but thats not usually the norm.If it were me I would defitely go to wal-mart, as for my career, I got totally burned out in retail and am now a carpenter, go figure, also no more ruined holidays because of retail... good luck

Just so we are all on the same page-- i am married and not looking for a pharmacy tech. My wife is a cat scan tech and she makes double what i make. She also has blond hair (natural) so Again i am not looking for extra (fun) at work.

I am still leaning toward walmarts at this time.
