Question Hey fellas...I need some advice.

Well, I have a 99' F-150 XLT Sport 4X4 4.2L 5 speed. It's black with GTS tail light black-outs, vent guards, bugshield, bedliner, Flowmaster 40 duals, and a K&N. (BTW, my V6 sounds GREAT!!! Some how, everyone thinks it's a V8. Fine...don't believe me. ) Anyway...I LOVE my truck, it's nice and tall, looks GREAT...the lines just flow together perfectly...BUT...I've SERIOUSLY been considering ordering me a 2001 F-150 XLT Sport 4X2 4.6L automatic 3:55LS. I have the A-Plan, so I get a GREAT deal on the fully loaded 4X2...$20,400 to be exact, but I'm afraid to let go of my 4X4, and that beautiful looking truck. My 4X4 is flawless, and only has 15,500 mi., but I can help but thinking how nice it would be to have that 20HP boosted 4.6L auto. I hate to lose the highth though too. See my dilema? Sure, I'll deck out the 4X2 to look the same, but I know they are worthless in the winter. Is the 4X2 actaully "more truck" in this case even though it's not 4X4? I hate to think I'm giving up my love, and $2,000 - $4,000 for less truck, ya know? The 4X2 will have CD, keyless entry, and the V8 with posi., but still. Is it time to get out of the 4X4 while it's still worth something? Anyway...I appreciate the advice of the more experienced.

P.S. I usually get a new truck every other year...they just keep getting bigger. FOr the same price, I could also have a 4X2 F-250, or a fully loaded Mustang GT coupe...what am I gonna do!?!?!?)

Cool

WEll I don't know what your winters are like, but I drive 365 days a year before the plows come out, and I don't get stuck!
That being said, what is wrong with a New 4X4 4.6L 5 speed?

Well...I'm thinking about it, but the 4X4 is $23,060, and that won't get me the payments I want. Also...I think I'd prefer an auto so I don't have to worry about it...but 5 speeds are more fun.

I can tell you from experience, my last truck was a 4x4. My current truck is a 4x2. I love my new truck but there are times when I wish I'd just gone ahead and uped up the cash and got it w/4x4. If you do decide to get the new truck, get the 4x4 option. Since you've already had a truck w/it, you will miss it like mad if you don't.

This is just an observation but have you realized that you asked for advice from "fellars" and so far you've only gotten it from females????!!!!

Hey...no kiddin'? Hehehe...I hadn't noticed that. Looks like you guys (I mean gals...) have almost as many posts here, as I have over on Blade Forums. Yet I still feel like such a newbie here still. Thanks for the replies gals.

Fine, I will be the first "fella" to reply. I am biased because I have always had a 4x4, and like to have the knowledge that I have the 4x4 there if I need it. It gets used a lot in the fall and winter....hunting and yes, ice fishing. My dad has a 2x4 F250, and has gotten stuck so many times where a 4x4 would have gotten out without paying a tow company to come and yank him out.
Also look at it from the stand point that a 4x4 will hold it's resale value longer, and when it comes time to trade it in, it is like putting the money back in your pocket.
Just my two cents.......

Boj: my last truck was a 97 4x4 5speed V8 supercab flareside. To get it, I had to order it!!! There's a thread somewhere around here about who's got 5speeds and how many of them had to order to get them. 9 out of 10 had to order IF your looking for the V8. You will find the smaller 4.2 5speed on the lot. Even had to order my current truck because I wanted the 6speed. I sold my last truck (last Nov)through this board to a guy in New Jersey. I just heard from him a couple of days ago, truck doing great, he's now got 60k on it. Did you want a used or a new truck???

Bought my first 4X4 in 85 and will never buy a two wheel drive again. That is, as long as I live in North Dakota.

Boj, I also live in western New York and had to go to a Pontiac Dealership before i found a used 4X4 5 speed. I would get a swap sheet, and only look at dealerships. I was able to find my truck in two days, of course i called every ford dealership in the area and even stopped by the Ford dealership in Bath NY, which is huge and they didn't even have any.

Jackal, I would definetely stay with the 4X4.

klaibs27: I noticed in you're sig the coming soon section. You listed Superchip as "I think". Your truck is very similar to my last truck. (do some searches here, especially in the computer chip section) I added the K&N air filter (just the filter) a 40 series Flowmaster catback and the superchip. The only one of those that really got that truck moving was that chip. Although I enjoyed the flowmaster the best because it was REALLY LOUD the superchip backed it up with power.

jackal:i guess the first question i would ask is how much do you use the 4wd in your current truck. if it's only once or twice a year you probably don't need it. i too have made it through many wis. winters without 4x4, although i have it now and enjoy it. i think my next truck will be back to 2wd.
if it's just the height your after get the 2wd and lift it.
as said before though the 4x4 is generally worth much more at resale time.
btw, i'm not too sure how it works exactly but doesn't the v6 with 5 spd actualy have more rear wheel horsepower then the 4.6 auto. due to the auto absorbing alot more of the hp.

boj: good luck finding a v8 5 spd on a lot. i looked for over a year before finally settling on a v6. of course a couple of weeks ago i was able to find a v8 5 spd. little too late though. it was a '98 for 16,500 i believe.

wildchild, how many miles did that 98 have on it so that it was only 16,500? I bought my the truck in the signature for about 20,000 which i thought was a steal considering the guy at the pontiac dealership didn't know it had the six disc changer or the alarm system. This truck had 21,000 miles on it when i got it, i figure that it was leased and it was in basically mint condition.
