What ammo do you carry for CCW?

I have been shooting the Winchester White Box FMJ just for the range, but what do you guys that carry trust your life with? My CCW background check just went through so I will be legal to carry tomorrow. Looking to buy some form of a hollow point, but looking for reccomendations from the experienced. I have done some research and I am looking for other opinions. I am carrying a 9mm SA Xdm with 19+1 capacity so I'm not too worried, but being an engineer I am always looking for the most effective solution.

Any Help?

I took out my Kel Tec pf9 when I got it and tried 4 different brands... after running 50 rounds of each through the gun I decided on Federal Hydra Shocks. I set up a few scenarios and shot the same with each type of ammo.

Different guns run ammo differently. Make sure the gun you carry likes the ammo you want to carry in it!!

Two things you need to know, the 9mm is not much gun but it has a lot of capacity. While I have several 9mms, I would never trust my life to such a light weight. But it beats the heck out of a switch. Here's what ammo looks like in ballistic gel out of a 9mm. Just click on the various bullets and look at the results. FWIW, in my 40SW and 45ACP I carry nothing but Golden Sabres.

I like the Speer Gold Dots. They are not as exotic as some of the SD ammo out there, but they perform nicely, and are reliable. I can get them locally at any shop too, which is nice because I like to practice with the ammo I carry.

9 mm and self defense? Hmmmm....... I thought 9's were only for plinking....... j/k

Honestly though, any modern JHP ammo should be sufficient for self defense. I use Remington Golden Saber.

The XDm is kinda big to use for conealed carry. I'm not saying it cant be done, but it wont be easy unless you live in a cold climate year round.

Most of the time I carry a Colt Defender 1911, but sometimes I only manage to conceal a Kel-Tec p3aT :o

The Hydrashok is an outdated design and has problems with expansion when shooting into materials like heavy cloth or denim. The hollow point gets stopped up with the material which results in inconsistent expansion. Just FWIW.

In 9mm, I carry 124gr +P Speer Gold Dots. The bonded jacket seems to be very resistant to coming apart upon impact. I carried 230gr Remington Golden Sabers when I had a .45 auto, mostly because they were the most consistent in feeding out of a 1911 IME.

I shoot Winchester Supreme T Series out of my M&P 40. I tried about 5 different JHP manufacturers before settling on these bullets. Just an FYI, they have them in a 9mm 147 grain which is the only grain bullet I would carry in a 9mm (just my opinion).

For my duty rounds in my Sig I carry Hydra-Shock, I need to go buy a couple of boxes of the HST and upgrade though.

In my XD sub I carry Hornady 185gr. Both are .40

I carry range rounds so if I ever kill someone I have a legitimate defense. I didn't kill them with a "special" round, just regular range rounds - since that's where I was heading, ironically, when I came in contact with the person who is now dead - from a range round, or 15 of them in a .40 cal...

Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like their are some quality ammo out there. As far as a 9mm not being big enough, if I can't defend myself with 19+1 rounds something is wrong. Most gunfights only involve a couple of shots tops, and if I find myself having to use the gun against a drug raged addict, I will just change my aiming point up higher to the head.

I hope I never have to use it, but in this world one never knows. My SA Xdm is a big gun, but I carrying it in a Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster. I am a skinny guy, and I can conceal it well. The gun was mostly bought for target shooting, but I also want to use it for CCW and hunting. Yes hunting, I have already killed some small game with it. LOL

Tell me about it, not to be offensive but with all the different ethnic groups at our school from overseas it should be an option at the bookstore. Please check here if you would like to add a pistol to your total bill. Most all act normal, but there is few like the "powdered sugar guy" that are not stable.
