Do you have the guts?
Ref... you about the most far out there. In lil ole ohio you may pay $350 for a house building permit... here in washington state (west side anyways) permits are extreem. I am not kidding when I said what the prices are.
Why am I "the most far out there."? Is it my fault that where I live the permits are rather reaonsable in cost?
I guess I weigh things---Chris, yes there are points and substances about the govt. that I do not like nor do I agree with, but I also look at the big picture---what do I get in return---can I put up with some negatives while taking in all of the positives? In my mind, the trade off, for me, allow me to win big time.

In my city you can put up a shed up to 96 square feet without a permit, anything bigger then you have to see the city.
I'm glad the ordinance is in place otherwise you'll have some yoko building an 800 sf eyesore and calling it a shed while he really rents it out to a family of 6
LOL you guys are funny. You claim I am simplistic by just pointing out small examples.. then you guys go overly simplistic. Labels have a purpose. They give some one the GENERAL idea of where someone is coming from. Of course you can't be all one or the other. There is some overlap. Ref... you about the most far out there. In lil ole ohio you may pay $350 for a house building permit... here in washington state (west side anyways) permits are extreem. I am not kidding when I said what the prices are. I got a lean put on my property for 4 years because the shed I build was to big. I didn't even know I needed a permit for a stinking shed. I had to cut 6 feet off of it to get the lean removed. I am looking at building a house on my property.. the permit process is unbelievable. Guys, all I am saying is that big government is bad. Your not getting something else I am saying. The bushes where NOT conservitive. Period. Grasp it. Beleive it. Just because they were the republican nominee.. doesn't make them conservitive. You all are too giddy about the big o being prez. The republicans over all are self destructing trying to be like democrats. It is very depressing. Conservitism will be back.. Until then, you all have fun with your social experiment.
The People will survive , and the Market will correct itself. Yea, Thus the citizens needed no government help.

The other previous posts, ya'll just give me to much credit.:o
Just out of curiousty Chris, how big of a shed did you make?

ref, I didn't mean to imply that your far out there because of permits. Just your general idea of government involvment in our lifes.
it was a 12X16 shed. No eye sore. No families living there. I could go to 120sq. without a permit. It has since gone up to 240 sq. without. I don't mind common sense permits or regulations. But when I have to get a permit to replace a few sheets of sheet rock in a bed room to remodel, they are getting out of hand.

It sounds like you are living in a very nice neighborhood, that neighborhood may have even been developed by an individual or corporation that built the infrastructure for it. But in the end The government will be responsible for the upkeep of it. That costs money. Those service guys you see in a dump truck and trash truck like to eat too. They also have families, and they would like to live in tolerable conditions. The next time you see a garbage truck, I suggest instead of looking at them in disgust , maybe you should buy them a coke or cup of coffee or tip them. They work for low wages, and make your life better.
I live in the country, and that is by choice, I don't like to live in a neighborhood full of people that think they are better than the man on the street. I have to upkeep my own road, which is about 1/4 mile long. At this time my tractor is broke down and waiting its turn to go into the shop. These winter rains have made my driveway very rough. Meanwhile I'm still paying taxes for the upkeep of the roads I use for work and personal travel.
Do you think it is cheaper to pay taxes for the upkeep of your neighborhood, or is it cheaper to do as I have to do. A tractor requires maintenance, and they wear out.
Then there is the septic system. We can't have raw sewage pouring out on the ground. The government supplies that waste disposal to you.
I grumble about taxes as much as the next guy. I do like to pay them though, to not have them would make us like any other third world country.
If you don't like the way the money is allocated, get involved in you local or state government.
The taxes we pay are a positive thing, don't you agree?

Your kidding right? I mean really... our rights are going away faster than a fart in the wind under obama.. and he isn't even inaugurated yet. The corruption is beyond the pale.. and he isn't even inaugurated yet. Both sides claim the video is right and the libs/cons have screwed it up.. it must be a truthful video......
Exactly which of our rights do you contend Obama is taking away from us?
I will agree with you that Bush has exhibited several "liberal" traits. In fact, I'd say he's exhibited the worst "liberal" traits. Likewise, he's exhibited the worst "conservative" traits as well, while ignoring the important ones. I never really thought about it before, but thanks to your posts in this thread, I now see that Bush exhibited the worst traits of both the "liberals" and the "conservatives", while ignoring their positive traits. And you wonder why people think he was the worst? Seems pretty clear to me.
A footnote on permits required for remodeling: Your friend won't be the last person to live in the house he's remodeling, someone has to make sure the work he does is up to code so that the next person that owns it buys a place that's safe, and that requires permits.
It doesn't matter if the permit is $200, $5,000, or 50 cents. It is bull crap that the government thinks its ok to charge us for the right to build on our own property. And maybe a Small $200 dollar permit isn't that big of a deal, but what about the thousands in permits and inspections if you were to build a work shop in your back yard......thats not ok, I don't understand why you think this is ok.

1. taxes are good... when they are effective, fair, and spent well.
2. My septic sytem was paid by me. It is exclusivly on my property.
3. The government does not pay for my waste disposal. I pay the refuse company $72 every 2 months to haul it away. That is a business here. And the garbage man makes about as much as me.. he throws trash, I work on aircraft propeller controls and have peoples lives in my hands. Maybe it is different in your neck of the woods.
4. I live in a private neighborhood.. the county or government does no road maintenance. We have a road association that we pay dues to to keep up the road. the police can't even give someone a speeding ticket when they are in the neighborhood.
5. The neighborhood I live in is mostly moblie homes. The smallest lot size is 1.25 acres. There are 166 lots. I am in the unincorparated part of the county where there are no city zoning or developed county zoning laws. But the county still is over bearing with there zoning and tax structure. I get by cheap by the city standards... I pay about $2,000 a year in property taxes. A freind in a larger county pays about $5,000. I have no problem with those taxes going to fire protection services and schools. Our tax system taxes the gasoline at almost the highest rate if not the highest rate in the country. That is for road maintenance. Also license fees pay for transit and road maintenance. I DON'T like my money going to planned parenthood, art subsidies, subsidies to homeless and outreach programs that have a history of not working. I don't like my taxes to be taken from me and given to someone who chooses not to work. I want efficiancy and a lot less waste in government.
6. Please, lets all try not to put words in anyones typing. I do not think government is bad or taxes are bad. It is how they are used, how they are collected, how the government does what they want, even when the public voted for things and the government decided the public is stupid and does things anyways... Get my drift? I can elaborate a LOT more about unfair taxing in western Washington if anyone is interested.
When I lived in the city:
A neighbor two houses away had a woodworking shop in his garage. He retired and installed a furnace. He installed it wrong, and it burned the garage to the ground. Luckily, the fire department got there before the whole neighborhood went up. An inspection by the city might have been a good thing.
My neighbor directly next door moved from an acreage to the city. He had 14 cars and trucks (most would not run) lined up around the lot line and in his yard. Trying to be a good neighbor, I put up a fence and planted Honeysuckle hedge so I would not have to see his junk. At the time, I thought he was a nice guy, it was his property and he could do what he wanted. One nice Sunday afternoon when we had company he started one of the junk cars. The smoke was so thick we had to go back in the house. That day, he was an inconsiderate jerk! A simple call to the city Monday morning and he was moving some cars off the property. Some people need to be regulated. Codes are in place and need enforced for a reason.

and I agree in some instances. A unsanitary and ugly place needs to be cleaned up. That is part of my view that government is doing something necessary.
Bush and the neo-cons in his cabinet were the worst at destroying the Constitution, shifting more power to the Executive branch than ever before, and justifying it by convincing the people that it was necessary to trade freedom for security, just like your video warns against. The religious right were the worst at trying to force their views on everyone else because "the majority rules", another no-no mentioned in your video.
Exactly which of our rights do you contend Obama is taking away from us?

Your rights under bush aren't affected in any meaningful way. It is all scare tactics on the liberal side to claim some how that bush's rules affect us. Sorry.. just ain't so.
Under obama, our rights will be affected directly. Under his presidency and his views incandescent light bulbs will be banned. It will cost us more for lighting and waste of the mercury in the florescent lights will be a problem.
government will mandated higher and higher fuel economy standards. This will (and has) cost life's. A light weight car is not as safe as a heavier car. Consumers need to have the say on what kind of car they want to purchase. That will be taken away from you. If you want a small efficient car anyways.. well you don't care if this is forced into happening.
limits on drilling for oil will be forced down the throats of oil companies. Gas prices will rise. This affects you.
environmental laws to stop man made global warming will be enacted that will cost you. And there isn't even any such thing as man made global warming.
Repressive tax laws are coming. That affects you. I could go on and on with things that the obama administration is going to do that directly affect your rights and will affect your pocket book. But all you can say is how the constitution is trashed under bush because of wire taps. (that doesn't affect you).. oh wait. The supreme court just ruled that the wire taps are legal and obama will most likely use that program.. oops... sad for you I guess.

One of your children may excel in the arts, you may then appreciate some of the other subsidies our government offers. I'm sure if you look around closely enough, you may find something you're already involved in that the government supports. For instance, if you are a fisherman, you may appreciate a lake that was built with tax dollars, that also generates electricity. Building that lake also employed people that otherwise were out of work, they then become tax paying citizens, and also purchase things at stores in your local area.
My point is these things you see as waste actually provide benefit to others and sometimes even to you indirectly.
I can elaborate much more if you like

Somebody decide to build a structure and skirt the zoning and the permit---AND HE WAS BUILDING IT ON HIS OWN PROPERTY---anyway, he more or less said "Screw this, I will do whatever I want to do because I can do it [I]BECAUSE IT IS ON MY PROPERTY
