Question What hardware/software combination do you use?

Since this is a safer and friendlier topic group, maybe I can get one through without getting killed.

Gateway Pen II 166mhz
Hard Drive 1.8GB capacity 390MB free space
Do have 1.3GB space free on Drive H host for Drive C after "compression" but do not yet know how to use it.
Robotics 56K modem that refuses to connect at more than 26K no matter where I put the setting.

ISP is AOL 4.0, using latest Internet Explorer update.
Connection is standard dedicated phone line with standard wiring.

Problems in general are very slow loading time. With f150online, it loads the board thing first, but cannot "connect/read" until banner thingies are through. When it comes to photos, take a Scotch and ciggie break, it takes forever.
Also get a ton of "Java Script Error" messages which I can just x out, but sometimes have to do so many times on the same posting.
I am one of those dummies that are computer illiterate, but have a few bucks to spend on equipment but who never seem to find the right combo. Don't want specific advice unless you want to contact me on my mostoysinc@aol account, but I know there are others that could maybe use some help from those of you that have a killer hardware/software combo that works fast and accurately.

Moveover:
Great start. Best place to get/pricing etc.?
I am familiar with the TV and wireless keyboard, I do have a wireless mouse, but not the other part.

Thanks HMustang:
Better add something here. In addition to your specifications, can you tell us if you are happy with combo? Load time in general, load time for photos and etc.
Thanks Bill

Cool

Gateway 2K 333mhz PII.
Netscape Comminicator 4.6
NetZero ISP www.netzero.com

-Free unlimited internet access
-56K winmodem usually log on at 36K-38K
So far I like this set-up had computer for 1.5 years, was using IE5 but must have got a bug, it suddenly became very slow / lost's of pauses. After I downloaded Netscape I removed IE5 and speed seems to have doubled.

Bill,
My WebTV (SONY INT-W200) basically is a small terminal with a 1G hard drive, 8M RAM & 2M ROM. It provides internet access without a PC. Has "picture in a picture" so you can watch TV or videos while online. Built in 56KBPS modem for standard phone line. Built in printer port. Printer optional. It's really fast at downloading text and pics. Simple on-screen programming of VCR, and automatic tuning to your fav. TV shows. Around $300 or less. System available from Sony or Phillips Magnavox. Sold by Sears, Circuit City, AAfes (military) probably many other sources.

Cool

I built my own PII-266MMX (overclocked to 300MHz), 256MB RAM, 6.4GB IDE & 4.3GB SCSI HDD, Sony AIT SCSI tape drive, US Robotics 56K modem, SB 16 sound card, Creative SBS380 speakers, Viewsonic 17" monitor, an old Deskjet 540 printer, and a Kodak DC210+ digital camera.

Using WebZone, a local ISP, I connect at 50.6Kbps and most sites are pretty quick. I'm running Windows 2000 RC1 and Netscape Communicator 4.61.

Work?- we won't go there. The list is too long.
