Lightbulb David Spade donates 100k to Phoenix police for AR 15's

David Spade is a class act! He just donated 100 grand to the Phoenix police dept to help them buy more AR 15 rifles.

Asking there be no fanfare or media attention, Mr. Spade called last week and said he wanted to donate $100,000.00 to the Phoenix Police Department towards the purchase of rifles to help keep our patrol officers and community safe.

That's awesome. Now I can say I like him for something other than Joe Dirt.

It's always good to hear things like this but at the same time it's kind of a bummer. Before reading this I never liked the guy, now I do but at the same time still can't stand his movies.

I know we got some peace officers on this board. This is a question for them. I do not mean to hijack this thread.
Why do the PD's choose a $2K weapon?
I was thinking something like a Ruger Mini 14 or Mini 30 would work well at only about $500 to $600 each. If not the Ruger, are there other choices for a PD in this price range?
Just wondering...

I'm not a officer but IMO, they're putting their life on the line to protect the public. Not a time to cheap out on the quality. $2K doesn't seem too bad either.

$2k is a little much for an AR15 and at police discount wtf!? They should be able to buy 100 of them IMO. I guess they cost $2k if you get pelican cases and all for them???

Most of them around here use Stag Arms rifles, and the only difference in the civilian and police version is the police version gets 25 test rounds where as the civilian gets 5. I am sure they get cut a deal for buying in bulk, so there really is no way they should cost 2 grand each even with optics.

BTW thats really cool that david spaide did this.

That is a real stand up move. I saw comments people wrote that he shouldve bought kevlar to save lives. But what happens when you are outgunned and the only thing the other person wants to do is take a police officers life. I say buy em the best guns money can buy. I have family in LE and each night is a blessing that they come home safe.

2k is about right if they are the select fire M-4 variant...for people like us that weapon would run around 14-16K..

If it's a straight stick AR semi-auto only then it had better be a Colt with that price tag..

Im not 100% positive but I don't think that general officers can carry select fire weapons, without going to special training.

Remember the guys who robbed that bank in LA, all decked out in body armor, with much better weapons than the police?

http://www.cnn.com/US/9702/28/shootout.update/

That was a big motivator to get police armed with more effective weapons so a situation like the one above can, hopefully, be ended quicker.
