Ford F-150 *VS* Toyota T100/Tundra
Well, up till recently I have been the owner of a 97 Toyota T100 (4x4 sr5 offroad ext cab), etc the works [currently w/ 45k miles].
The toyota might be mechanically sound, but it sure isn't sturdy. I took it offroading 5x through a rough course and lots of mud. The inside now creaks where I probably busted spot molding. Furthermore there are lots of other little noises that a not-so-sturdy frame causes.
I want to trade this sucker in for a nice sturdy F150 now, has anyone had any non-lemon related problems with F150s, offroading and the like? Furthermore, if you get an XLT w/o skid guards (though still a 4x4 and all) is it possible to upgrade it to an offroad package and a truck shop?
Thanks

Speaking of the Tundra, has anyone else noticed that the four door cab has handles on the outside of the rear doors. Can you actually open the rear doors without first opening the front doors? If not, then why put handles on the outside of the door. I think it gives it a very "unclean" appearance.

My second of the "new" F150s. Great trucks!

I think the quality ratings for trucks from worse to best is: Dodge, Chevy/GM, Ford, Toyota... So if you want a "rattle free" truck go with the Toyata... But if you want an awesome looking truck... go with the F-150...
Yeah, toyota's feel like they're going to flip going around curves too much, not to mention they hydroplane constantly and fish tail pretty bad too sometimes (back frame isn't heavy enough). Additionally, they get blown around in the wind... so you might ask why I would have gotten the toyota instead of the f150... well here's the story:
Spring 99, a ford dealer had a left over 98 f150 ext cab 4x4 offroad package lariat, THE WORKS.. end of the month end of the quarter, they weren't selling much, they slashes the price a few times, when it came down to it, my offer was 24,000 ... there's was 24,500 and they wouldn't budge, so that's why I went for the toyota. It's the little things in life that amuse me.

I'll race any Tundra owner and put the little yuppie truck in it's place even if they "claim" to have the fastest acceleration.

I looked at a Tundra, when I asked how much they wanted for the truck, I was told sticker price.I laughed and walked out.I wasn't planning to buy one was just curious on what they were like.
Yeah, I asked the salesman where the Ford dealer was and walked out when they told me the $$.
I didn't even drive it.
Guess what NO V8 regcab.
No regcabs on lot either.
And isn't the whole idea of a Supercab to have lots of space in the cab?
My regular cab has almost as much space as thier extended cab.
I can just imagine how much space an F150 supercab has.
Thier V6 is as much as Fords V8
As long as Toyota thinks thier truck is GOD then the fate of Tundra is sealed.
Just like the T100.

I did test drive the Tundra before deciding on an F-150, and to me, it did not feel any more 'tight' or roadworthy than the Ford. What really cinched it was the back seat in their extended cab. It is BOLT UPRIGHT and though I don't plan on driving from the back seat too much, my kids spent a lot of time back there and they would be pretty uncomfortable... my dog too!

Has anyone seen that tundra commercial where it's towing a boat up a hill, and it passes a shelby cobra! They also mention that it's got the most torque in it's class. I assume they mean in a class without the triton 5.4L. To reply to J.C. and Spartan, I've taken mine offroad quite a bit, and the only problems I've had was that I had to tighten up the bolts on my torsion bar crossmember. And I marked the cab from the box twisting and making contact with the cab at the corners of the rear window.

Spartan: I ordered my 97 new. The only problems I've had are:
leakey rear slider; sealed with tube of clear sealent
using oil; found out I didn't know how to read the dipstick
shaky driver's mirror; dealer replaced
lug nut recall, dealer replaced
rear springs recall, dealer fixed
almost 48k and drives fantastic. No lemon here

Spartan,
I don't have the ORP so the skid plates were an option. (I do have them). I really dig my truck. I have had it in the dirt a couple of times but didn't and am not going to beat the hell out of it. It does "wheel" great!!!
I haven't experienced and probs with the truck and it seems like it will stand up to almost anything.
Hope this helped.
