My 5.4L 98 XLT s/c was built 4/98..the only "problem" I have is that the roof gutter channels have a couple of minor cracks in them. Other than that..it has been a great truck! No piston slap, no door cracks, no leaking rear window.

I spent a great deal of time researching the truck market via the internet(consumer reports, recall data bases, resale value, reliability..etc) before deciding on the Ford F-150. I am very glad I decided to buy a FORD.

My truck currently has just over 10k miles on it. I took it in 5 months ago to get a creaking looked at. It turned out to be a loose torsion bar bracket, probably due to all the offroading I've done. The piston slap problem can be closely heard, but isn't anything serious at this point. I've drove threw creeks, rivers, swamps and mud bogs, and have never had any problems except for clearance and traciton problems. I try not to be overly aggressive offroading with it, but it's hard not to when I'm trying to keep pace with my buddies in there older abused trucks! The only truck I can compare my truck to that endures the same level of punishment, is my brothers 99 GMC Sierra work truck. Mined you this is only one of many, but it's already been in for a rebuilt tranny. I thought my brother was a little bias at first (him also being die-hard ford) mentioning an internal door rattle and a slight chassis vibration over bumps at high speeds. But after riding in it, and pointing out all the problems and dislikes, it's just icing on the cake. I have to say, I never even considered buying any other truck when the time came. I knew what I wanted from the start. One thing that aggrevates me, and other's that have much expressed it in other posts, is the fuel mileage, averaging 13.5 to 14 with a K&N. I heard the 2000's are rated for 17/20, is this right?

I now have 25,300 miles. Engine check light at 25 miles(loose wire), Alignment and balance at 11,500 miles. Pretty much on par with the Nissan and Toy that I had before going to a full size truck.

No SLAP, CRACK, or SOPped rear seat. It's GRRRREAT.

I've been very lucky that I haven't had to go back to the dealer with any problems. . . although it's only been two months and 1200 miles.

A different story on both the Windstar AND Taurus.

We've had our 97 F-150 4X4 4.6L since May 1996. It now has 24000 glorious miles. It was sent to the dealer for 2 recalls, but other than that, performance has been excellent.

She still looks and drives like the day she was picked up, actually better!

New guy here, excellent site!

Had my 97 for 80K, and sold it to a friend in Sept. Never spent the night at the dealer yet. Not one breakdown. Still had original brakes on it when I sold it.

Got 8k on my 2000. Nothing wrong yet, and I do not expect anything to go wrong. Ford has sold over a million of these truck in the last 4 years. They have had very few major problems.

So far....my 2000 is 100% problem free. I currently have 1,500 miles on it.

My 98 F-150 that I traded in had almost 18,000 miles on it...no mechanical problems at all..just had the roof water channel cracks (minor).

Cool

All these little problems aside, the overall truck will outlast anything on the road. All the manufacturers are striving to make a better truck (and car). Ford has gone to doing a lot of maintenance work because as they said they will be building better and better vehicles so the warranty work will start to disappear. That is why they are offering maintenance at competitive prices. Hey, I'd rather have my truck dealer serviced than go to Pep Boys if the prices were similar. Now they even sell tires. (well they sold them before, but for big $$$) At my dealership we post the competitions prices for certain normal maintenance job. We are either close or cheaper. Just my 2cents.

Another 2000 model here that's had zero trouble - 5,000 km (3,000 miles) on her now. My '98 had zero trouble in 43,000 km (about 26,000 miles) though the clutch squeaked some. Just the two recalls (intake icing and wonky wheel nuts).

My second of the "new" F150s. Great trucks!

My 97 XL SC 4x4 4.6L-cloth seat ripped at seam, got it recovered, 15k before trading to my 98 XLT SC ORP 4.6L-no problems at all 15k, traded to my 99 SC ORP 5.4 15K-piston slap new engine still in process build date 12/13/99, leaking rear window (no big deal), stinking air con&ventilation system-I think dealer sprayed some HD stuff to kill bacteria/mold. Hey, I dont need no steenking air con! I love this truck. Ford is taking care of the piston slap, and the orig engine ran perfect once warmed up.

Around 15,000 miles on my 1999, and to date no problems with one exception. When I hit my keyless entry, the interior light sometimes doesn't go on. So minor that I haven't bothered to take it in. Otherwise I am happy as can be with this vehicle. Roomy, lots of power, looks great. In fact, my turck is Deep Wedgewood Blue, and I get as many comments and looks on it as I did on my old Vette. Go figure! I had a 1996 Ranger 4x4 SuperCab and it was just as trouble-free.

If you want a sports car? Chevy Corvette (sorry folks...ain't nothin' like it). A truck? Ford. Every time. No contest.
