Question What does XLT and Lariat mean?

Hi,

Just want to know what the abbreviation XLT means. And why the most expensive model is called Lariat.
I know Lariat is another word for Lasso but why is it used for the topmodel.

Cool

I'm no expert, but if I were to take a guess, I would assume that they chose Lariat because the traditional market for high-end pickup trucks is Ranchers out west who want a stylish vehicle that still has utility. Things have obviously changed over the years, with more and more "city folk" finding out what great vehicles these Ford pickups are. Not sure where XLT comes from. Just my $.02 opinion....

Lariat is now for the leather interior. did not used to be. XLT started as a trim package in the seventies and ended up as both trim and option packages with the addition of Lariat in the early eighties as the XLT Lariat. Although I have seen a couple of late seventies XLT Lariats, very rare. Now the XLT is usually loaded pretty well although I have seen a couple with roll down windows 97's only I think. I have no idea what XLT stands for. Lariat is an XLT with a few upgrades and leather uph. (has something to do with the lasso/ranch thing I guess)

F150Europe, All: Going back to the 1960's Ford defined XL as "extra lively", "extra lovely" and "extra luxuary". Add a T onto that and that stood for touring. So you have a base model, an XL that is flashier(chrome), and an XLT that is both spiffy and more comfortable.(F-150= AC+seats+power+ better stereo etc.) Lariat goes back to the Old West image of when a cowboy's worth was dependent on the use of his lasso( his tool of the trade) hence the image of the Lariat being the pickup mans' tool. Today it means that Ford really "roped you in!"

Question

Has anyone ever tried to fit the "SIGNAL" mirrors on a vehicle not originally equipped that way? I really would like to have that feature on my Lightning to keep people from crowding me on dual turn lanes of which we have a bunch in Atlanta.

I could have sworn that I had a 1972 RANGER XLT Lariat.

The correct (but rarely used) term for the base model is "Custom". So, in order from least to most equipped:

Custom
XL
XLT
Lariat

For a fee, you can usually get pieces of the next "higher" model installed.

I have an XLT and the only options not in it that a Lariat has are the signal mirrors and leather seats. I have keyless remote/alarm, premium cd changer, power seat, power mirrors, power locks, power windows. Along with the usual a/c, cruise, tilt. I also have a 3.55 rear end. The only other difference I can think of is the wheels, mine are not the 5 spoke.

K&N , Flowmaster cat-back w/3" chrome tips. Bosch+4 plugs, Superchip.

Future mods: underdrive pulleys,4" lift, 16.5 wheels with 33's,ram air hood, and someday a supercharger.
