NOMO,
The 72 Ranger package was a "rugged use" package. It had limited slip, 360 or greater motor and a beefier suspension. It was available in 2 and 4 wheel drive (4 wheel was rare). I had a 72 Ranger with a 3 on the tree, 360 CI engine and a 370 limited slip. It was a basic truck. Full guages, AM radio and heater were the standard options. I was not aware of any XLT or Lariat options. I was also 13 when my dad ordered this truck and drove it for 4 years until it was passes to me.

Thanks seacrow. I guess times must change.

Tsquared-
I got mine when I turned 17 in '84. It had a 390 2bbl w/auto and ??? rear diff. Seems I remember it having what we called the "camper special" package which would be as you described (HD springs & low gears). It sure liked -LOVED- gas. Would scratch in 2nd even with 60 series tires. It was loaded for the times. Even had under-dash AC, full chrome side and tailgate mouldings with the lovely "wood-grain" inlay.

By the time I got rid of it, it had a stock 351C and tranny out of a '74 Ranchero with "economaster" rear gears out of a '78 pickup. It could outrun a stock '82 camaro! Man I miss that old truck- especially the built-in tool box. That is a feature that Ford should consider offering again.

Bill Murray:

You'll find the signal mirrors at your dealer or in the F-Series Accessories catalog (at your dealer). Part # 17696, suggested retail $258.00. Other neat stuff in there. Hop on down and get one. --- They are also in the Performance Products catalog, presumably from the people who make them in the first place.

Yeah the 70s trucks didn't have many options but I'll bet they didn't cost $20,000 either.

There are more differences between XLT and Lariat besides the signal mirrors and leather. First off the Lariats come with many more standard options. Just about everything you can option onto a XLT, comes with a Lariat. Keyless entry, V8, larger tires, auto trans, power drivers seat, floor mats, CD player, etc. These options (and more) come standard on a Lariat and options on a XLT. But there are some other exterior differences. For example, all Lariats (reg/super cab, reg/flare/long bed, 4x2/4x4) can have two tone paint and wheel-well moldings. Only certain XLT models can have these.

The 70's trucks also were very forgiving on engine transplants. My 72 was sold with a 429 4-speed that I ran for 3 years after the 360 broke the crank.

Ah, the memories. I learned to drive on a '78 F150 Ranger (in about 1984)that my dad got new. It had 351M, automatic, A/C, factory AM/FM, cruise, and cloth seat. Big stuff for a truck in those days. The engine was a dog until we installed a Weiand intake, Holley 4 barrel carb, and got rid of the EGR system which didn't work. That livened it up a lot. In '78, "Ranger" was more of a trim package which included square headlights, cloth seat, and several other items. The trim levels were (I think):
custom
Ranger
XLT
Lariat

There were also several "sport" appearance packages then too. I knew a guy in high school that had a '78 F150 with a sport package and a factory 460 V8. Man, it would fly! BTW, I think the Lariat package goes back to the early seventies and the XLT was around even around in the late '60s

Question Triton

Bring back an oldy from Sept 1999

Ok I know Triton is a God of the sea.
Actually he is the son of Poseidon (Neptune)

Why do you think Ford chose the word Triton for the V8 5.4's.

Triton/Mighty God as in most powerfull engine.

Triton sounds good.

I have noticed the word Triton is very popular on the internet.
A lot of businesses are using the word triton for their products name.

What is your opinion?

This is an interesting post. I have a 98 Lariat (bought used) and it does not have "keyless entry". As a matter of fact some of you may remember my inquiries into the "gem or rap modules' that I have unsuccessfully searched for in my truck. (I would love to do the keypad mod)
Is anyone aware of a site where you can retrieve a copy of the original window sticker? Seems to me there was a discussion about this at one time. Would like to check mine out. Thanks in advance, ennis

fourhour,

I think people then were being a little loose with the term, 'keyless entry'. Where you are reffering to a keypad on the door, I think what was referred to as standard in the above posts on a '99 lariat was the little transmitter that comes with the key. Also, in '98 I think even that was a $265 option, including the anti-theft. In '99 they came with the Lariat.

I don't remember anything about the door keypad for either year.

Well my XLT has alot of options that were standard on the Lariat like the 3.55 gear the 255/70 tires the CD player 4.6L engine and Auto trans to just name a few so you could say mine is about as close as you could get to a REG. Cab Lariat in 2000 as they only came in the Super Cab in 2000 and on.

Raoul, I do understand the....

difference between keyless entry and keypad. What I did notice in these posts was the GEM or RAP module also served as the receiver for the key fob, something that was not passed along to me at the point of sale, if in fact the truck was built with one. Hence, that is why I would like to see the original sticker! I would do the mod in a heartbeat if I could locate the module or THE WIRING HARNESS, something that has eluded me alltogether.

Freezer,

The two-tone is not correct for 2001-2, there are many Lariats in monotone. Two-tone is an option. As a matter of fact, I was visiting my buddy at the dealership yesterday and watched a guy take delivery on an all red Screw Lariat...

My dad had 1978 F150. It had the "Explorer" package... not sure what that included. He likes to tell people he had a Ford Explorer in 1978 just to see there faces.... I remember it having a factory hood ornament and Explorer badging
