Los Angeles Times Holding Out

The media is full of reports tonight that the Los Angeles Times is refusing to release a video from 2003 that includes State Senator Obama, as a featured speaker, and Bill Ayers at a dinner for Professor Rashid Khalidi.
Khalidi teaches Arab Studies and was previously alleged to be a PLO Member. Khalidi denies any ties to the PLO. At any rate, Khalidi is definitely not a friend to Israel.
The LA Times does not give a specific reason for the refusal to produce the tape. The LA Times does claim to have previously written articles describing the contents of the tape.
The McCain campaign is publicly demanding the times produce the tape.
For those of us who are familiar with the LA Times, we can tell you the paper is extemely liberal, even by California standards. It appears the Times has gone from simply covering the election to trying to help determine the outcome of it.
Before anyone starts claiming the Times is protecting a Source, the dinner was intended to honor Khalidi. One would think the words spoken on his behalf by a Presidential candidate would be a source of pride, not embarrassment.

I hope they don't release it, I think it would be much worse for Obama if they don't. If they release it, and its not horrible then most people will let him off on it. If they don't release it then everyone wonders why, and assumes its so bad that nobody want's them to see it.

The Times on Tuesday issued a statement about its decision not to post the tape....

Jamie Gold, the newspaper's readers' representative, said in a statement: "More than six months ago the Los Angeles Times published a detailed account of the events shown on the videotape. The Times is not suppressing anything. Just the opposite -- the L.A. Times brought the matter to light."

The original article said that Obama's friendships with Palestinian Americans in Chicago and his presence at Palestinian community events had led some to think he was sympathetic to the Palestinian viewpoint on Middle East politics. Obama publicly expresses a pro-Israel viewpoint that pleases many Jewish leaders.

In reporting on Obama's presence at the dinner for Khalidi, the article noted that some speakers expressed anger at Israel and at U.S. foreign policy, but that Obama in his comments called for finding common ground.

It said that Khalidi in the 1970s [Obama age 12] often spoke to reporters on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
When/if Fox gets the tape, will they play Obama's comments?
Or will they play the deragatory comments of others while Obama, an Illinois State senator, sits there quietly awaiting his turn to speak, aka Rev Wright?
Inquiring minds want to know.

[Obama age 12]
oh yes the old "well i was a kid when he did it so it doesnt matter" defense again. so lame. i was a kid when manson killed people but you wouldnt catch me sitting in his living room or toasting him at a party, even if he said he "changed."

theres a rumor going around that obama/msnbc is trying to buy the tape so they can destroy it.

Well Manson is a murderer sitting in prison so, you couldn't be in his living room or at a party.

This guy Khadhfi, was a Chicago college professor.
Bill Ayers also a Chicago college professor.

The bottom line that the 'attackers' want to ignore is that Obama was indeed 9 and 12 years old when the reputed activities occured.

It is a stretch that I view as lame.

But if that is all you got then you have to run with it, so in that light I do understand.

i know hes in prison, i was speaking hypathetically. you knew that

the "obamanites" want to use the fact that he was a kid when it happened so its irrelavent that they associate now. thats a stretch that i view as lame.

i never said its ALL i got, i was just pointing out that the specific arguement that using his age as a defense is a lame excuse. i have mentors at work who are much older than me. i can assure you that if i knew that they bombed the pentagon and police stations or were a spokes person for the plo when i was a kid they sure as heck wouldnt be my mentors or golfing buddy.

I guess it would also depend on if you even knew.
Look how we are communicating across these threads.
We're tight.
Still, I am at risk because I have no idea what you may have done when I was a kid.

So you must be just as upset for McCain for having an "old friend" that was convicted and served time for conspiracy, burglary and illegal wiretapping and has admitted plotting to kill a journalist he didn't like, plotting to kidnap "leftist guerrillas" at the RNC convention and has told people how to kill federal agents, and has said that listening to Hitler's speeches "made me feel a strength inside I had never known before".

If Obama has nothing to hide he should ask the LA times to release the tape and end all the speculation. It's a simple solution if you have nothing to fear or hide, just my average joe opinion.
(btw i can't vote for either side)
