Homemade Speed Bump - Seriously!!!
ok im just throwing it out there...I came home one day and there are damn speed bumps on a main road going into my house. 5 of them, to be exact. Every day I drive over 10 Fing speed humps. But I drive A lifted truck and I know the Fer who had them put in...I dukes of hazzard that one every time. I can't wait till I get my Long arm rail buggy built. Then it is on like Donky Kong
My boyfriend's street is used as a cut-through too. His mom has a 98 Altima which has been hit twice by being parked on the street, both times taking the mirror off. I've been nicked once by a passing truck, and since I was sitting in my truck, I went after him. No damage but a scuff. The problem is, people park on both sides of the street, and then drivers are idiots and all try to squeeze through at the same time.
I'll never forget one night when I was leaving his house, I was backing the truck out and someone, most likely drunk, came ripping down the street doing at least 60. I was in the middle of the road backing out of his driveway, and had to reverse into the driveway across the street, and the driver never even braked. He/She missed my front bumper by inches.
Another problem street in my area just had 3 speed bumps installed, so complain enough and you'll get them.. Unfortunately, who knows how long that will take

The Illinois State Police used to park old cruisers along the tollways with a dummy in the front seat and an old broken radar gun on the dashboard. I went by one on my way to work one morning and someone had set a Dunkin Donuts box on the hood.........
To the OP.
You might think about setting up a video camera over the next several days in preparation for the meeting next Tuesday.
You and your neighbors can talk till your blue in the face about drivers ripping dangerously thru your community, but at the end of the day that just an opinion and is highly subjective
Video evidence, that the city council can see, might be valuable to helping your cause.
Get video of the intersections too. Many drivers using your neighborhood as a short cut are likely to only slow for stop signs (aka rolling stops).

I don't know how your street is set up exactly but here in communities that border main roads they set up cement blocks at one end of the road. One way in and out. This would limit traffic to the people that live on the street and solve your problem also.
video for sure. i had a problem like this, my street is a 35 and we'll have kids doing 65 down it. so i dumped a nice long trough of dirt and made a perfect speedbump. within a day it was almost flattened, but it slowed them down now!

you could always use some strategically placed claymore mines.....

TSC
This is now on hyatice indefintely. I had a family emergency come up today. Also, some of the letters I put in everyone's mailbox were returned by the mail man because they didn't have stamps. I put out around 12 of them and 3 were returned with no signature. So 9 probably got to the neighbors. I should have stuck them in their doors instead of their mailboxes. I wasn't thinking.
I'll get the whole thing on record with video and everything and post it for those who care to see what happens. I wrote the letter at work and made copies there. I was going to post it up here but I didn't go into work today and that's where I have the only electronic copy. I'll try to get it up here in the next few days. But my family situation is now priority #1. I won't be making this Tuesday's Meeting either.

I asked about having speed bumps put on my street because of the speeders and I was told that they would slow down the response time from the fire department/ambulance. I asked the police to petrol the street more often and one of the cops told me to watch my speed because he would pull me over if I was speeding. I told him please do if I am speeding.
i understand the whole slow down emergency responders arguement but the percentage of time a cop or fire truck would be actually responding to something on a residential street is a very, very small percentage compared to the amount of speeders who drive on it. i have lived in my house for 2+ years. never had any agency have to respond code to anything on my street, just as an example.
