You still chose the union to begin with. And yes, the union is it's members, it should change from within.

Why would you take a job that takes your pension if you leave? I've always been able to leave mine as is, take a cash out or roll it into my new employers fund.

I will still have my pension if I left. but I will have a better pension if I stay. I happen to LOVE my work. I enjoy it like a little kid enjoys candy. Not many can say that. So in the big picture, the $45 a month I pay in dues (soon to be $75) is a large price to pay, but not enough for me to leave... yet. I am always looking. And I get to do fun things with the other employees. The union bulletin board at work has an article with a picture of obama talking about how the nasty republicans are going to take the union away from us. And how obama isn't going to take our guns....so everyone is putting stick pins in obamas face. The quality manager is an old hippie.. Very smart man, but very nutty professor type. It is fun seeing him get all upset about Palin and McCain. He turns beat red when he sees his precious obama defaced. He is one of about 4 people that like obama there. Good times.

It does sound as though the union is beneficial for you, is that not true? I'm not all in love with unions, I respect what they've done in the past but some are obviously doing stupid things now, but it does sound as though they are doing good things, at least on your behalf.

In my line of work, in my part of the country, you don't have any choice but to be union. I am following my work. I am not following the union. It can be argued that with some companies now, the union is a hindrance to wages just because of the head banging nature of negotiations. If I owned a company that was unionized, I would have a very hard time not taking the attacks on the company personal when negotiations come around. That, coupled to the fact that die hard union fans are rabidly against the company. Not a good work environment. When I worked for PACCAR at the kenworth truck factory, I have no doubt that we would have been treated better without a union. PACCAR is an awesome company to work for. Where I work now, there are about 38 union members. Not enough for the union to really care. Our rep is a slimy little weasel that doesn't stand up for us. I am beginning to think that getting rid of the union could be a good thing. Maybe the company will treat us better? If not, I can move on.
