Self protection
I'm in Kalifornia. I think we have to actually be shot before we can claim 'self defense'. Thank you Senators Feinstein and Boxer for making sure our convicts live a nice long life.
In our state, you may only use deadly force if you reasonably believe your life is in 'Imminent Danger'. You must also retreat if you have the opportunity. This means your intruder must actually appear to have a deadly weapon and you have nowhere to run. Simply breaking into your house does NOT justify the use of deadly force.
My late Father (a Korean War Combat Vet) gave these instructions;
1) Shoot the burglar first.
2) Fire a warning shot into the ceiling immediately after shooting the 'Perp'. Tell law enforcement the warning shot was first and the 'Perp' did not stop his advance.
3) Go into your kitchen and get the biggest knife in the drawer. Put it into the hand of the now dead 'Perp' and claim he came after you with it.
4) Hope your wife and kids still love you enough to cover your a%#.
Not sure if his advice is PC. At least I'll live long enough to continue the debate.
I like to keep my .357 mag close at hand. My 12 gauge is just too long to be creeping around with. Hollowpoints (HP) tend to expand and penetrate less. This would logically minimize the risk of an 'errant round' ending up in one of your neighbors. Not sure if this is a reasonable defense in court to the use of the HP.
Hope none of us ever has to find out what works.

If someone is trying to steal my family jewels, i will shoot him in his family jewels.
1) I shot to stop a threat from advancing.
2) He might survive.
3) If the poor bastard does survive he has to live the rest of his life knowing someone shot his nuts off.
4) House was protected.
Does it matter how big the gun is? go shoot your buddy in the nuts once with a .22 and see what happens. He'll probably live but be in some tremendous pain! Shoot him with a 12 ga. 3 1/2in. slug or a higher caliber rifle like a .330 Remington Ultra Mag he'll most likely die, just depends which gun is closer to me when he attacks i guess.

For me self defense is "shoot to kill!" I would rather not have some guy in court claiming I shot him and he wants me to pay his medical bills for me shooting him. If someone breaks into my house and they put me or my family in immediate danger before the cops get there, they will be going 6 ft under.
Small caliber shot to the body is unlikely to stop someone who is high on meth/crack/PCP/pick one.
By default, the poker.
BTW, where the hell do you guys, with the small arsenal by your beds, live? How many break-ins have you had in the 'hood where you live?
BTW#2. 10 years of martial arts. I keep two armies with me at all times, a right army & a left army. Perp is unlikely to survive, especially with the poker sticking out of his ear.

As far as caliber. True story. I had a patient back in March, he was involved in a gun fight with another guy. My pt used a .357 the other guy had a .22. My pt was waiting in the ER with 3 gunshot wounds from the .22 and stable, the other guy (recipient of the .357 rounds) was rushed to surgery (I never heard if he made it).

Grim
It can screw a knee up bad.

There is a guy in my town that tried to kill himself with a 22 revolver, he is alive. He now only has peripheral vision
