i personally have been eyeballing a pump shotgun, 1 shot will stop the threat. he/she may or may not live through the body shot.

I have my Glock 19 in my fingerprint safe all ready to go I have been looking at getting an AR15 or a pump action 12ga such as the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 500. The AR would be more for the range, but still could do a lot of damage because it is accurate and fast. Plus it can hold 30 rounds compared to the Glock's 15+1

The good thing is that you are in Arkansas. Here you have the right to defend your home without attempting to flee. If you are on the street you must show that you had no way to avoid the threat. If you are in your house and someone unlawfully enters you can shoot/stab/fire poke that **** until they are dead and walk away perfectly clear. In fact in my CCW class the instructor said that if it comes to that situation killing is your best defense. This way it is your word and a broken door vs. a dead body. If the perp lives it is your word against his, things could get messy. Do your part to help prevent prison overcrowding, fill the graveyards instead.

ar15s are very fun. my uncle was in the reserves and i have been able to shoot an ar15 and a car15 (also to think about there is now a r15 made by remington that is looking sweeet), but id advice against it for personal defense. since the .223 is a very fast and small round i would imagine there would be excessive pass thru which could be bad in residental situation (i mean hey you never know). but having a shorty 870 would be spot on i think for home protection. especially considering how reliable of a reputation 870s have, none the less being a pump.

CRF250rider1000 i re-read you post and want to fix my statement. I see that you were thinking of the AR as a range gun, and if it came down to it you could use it for protection, just not as your primary defense. hope no hard feelings on that one.

One shot with a small caliber handgun or a poker....... I'm very pro-gun and I'd have to say the poker. Reason is, you are excited and scared, most likely there is little light in the room. Your chances of missing, even if you are proficient and I consider myself more than proficient, is very high. I once read statistics on how close the average police shooting is and how high their miss rate is. I couldn't find them on a quick search on google, but I seem to remember that the average firefight happens 10yds or less and the miss rate is over 50%. All that being said, I have my 1911 with 2 clips loaded with alternating fmj and hydro-shock bedside and my PPK/S with 2 clips loaded with hollowpoints nearby. We do have the castle doctrine here as well, but all those rounds are there to get me out of danger and to safety to call the police. If I happen to kill the intruder, then I guess I got lucky.

all you need is .223 TAP round and then you don't have to worry about the bullet traveling too far after it hits something

The AR would suck as a home defense weapon. If you used a jacketed bullet it could burn through the next three houses. So you hit the perp and your neighbor. Frangible bullets would minimize this but it still is long and harder to maneuver in tight spots (like a hallway). A pistol is much better or a short barreled shotgun. Plus you will never get off more than a few rounds.

I was told that when the geneva convention outlawed expanding bullets for combat and required all to be fmj, the US picked the .223 because it had a tendancy to tumble and ricochet around the chest cavity. This was what my drill instructors told us at Army boot camp anyway.

Now for the question {odds wise} Which weopon would do the least damage, and not kill someone. A strong man with a fire poker, or a body shot with a small caliber weapon say 22 revolver, 25 auto, even a 38 caliber. One shot, the odds are the person would survive. One good solid lick with the poker, that person is maimed for life or dead.
Are you planning to pop a cap in somebody? Think I saw this scenario on Dateline or something. All you guys are accessories. - Og

Small caliber shot to the body is unlikely to stop someone who is high on meth/crack/PCP/pick one.

By default, the poker.

BTW, where the hell do you guys, with the small arsenal by your beds, live? How many break-ins have you had in the 'hood where you live?

BTW#2. 10 years of martial arts. I keep two armies with me at all times, a right army & a left army. Perp is unlikely to survive, especially with the poker sticking out of his ear.
