Thunderfobia

My poor dog hunter is so afraid of thunder, guns, fireworks and it just keeps getting worse. He cowers under end tables which is not an easy feat he weighs in at 123lbs and let's just say its a tight squeeze. When the thunder comes again he quickly runs out to another spot and this just continues until the thunder goes away. He is a wreck big time. My question is does anyone else have this issue with their dog and any ideas as to what i can do to remedy this would be great!. He is a great dog and he's about 4years old. He listens to what is said and never piddles in the house never, doesn't chew anything he's great but when the storms come calling he is a complete mess.

Ideas?

I've heard of people getting meds from the vet. Very mild sedatives just to take the edge off.

My little Jack Russel is terrified to death of thunder & lightning. She will bark/scratch/moan/squeal/jump/howl and everything else a dog will do if shes outside when that first crackle goes off.

Yep same here but he does it in the house also big time. I am thinking of building him a type of safe house something soundproofed he can hide in until it's over. We have had nothing but storms this week and he's let's say abit taken by it all.

I had a springer spaniel that was abused before I got her. She was very afraid of guns and fireworks. So at lunch time I would take her to the shooting range, and played fetch with her with a tennis ball. Over time she was broke of the fear. But she was OLD. took her hunting after that and she would lay down where ever she felt like she needed a rest.. and would stay there until she was ready to get up.. never was much of a hunter.. but I broke her of her fear of loud booms.....Just don't get mad at the dog.. he doesn't understand your frustration.

My chocolate lab is the same way. I just turn the stereo up and apparently she thinks thunder is bass. It doesn't bother her as long as the stereo is loud.

Well your just a wealth of information ain't you . Mine is a Chesapeake bay retriever, i got him when he was 12 weeks old from a friend who was going to take it to the pound. He has always been a good well behaved dog and now this thunder thing is horrible for him.

We have two Labradors on the ranch. One of them is a state champion bird dog. The other is a complete coward and scared of guns and loud things (like you say). Over time she has gotten better, but she still runs for under the table or car whenever something loud goes off...

My 7 yr old black lab is like that. He is a pansy. Thunder, guns, firecrackers, the lawnmower......anything like that and he is scraping on the garage door to get in. Hell, he will hardly sleep outside. Once I open the door he bolts in and about knocks me over.
Its old and annoying, and I have no idea what to do either.

Hey Buck!

Thunder doesn't bother my Chessie, but fireworks do. It was a crazy July 4th around here too!
