Let's Talk Guns
But I'll also second the Baby Eagle in the 40 SW in a semi-compact all steel. It's also my carry pistol and mine shoots one inch groups or less at 25 yds from bags. Mine started out with a hard creeping trigger. But after a few hundred rounds, it's better than my $1500.00 Kimber Match Target. So I'd also suggest taking a look at the Baby Eagle but don't expect a bunch of after market goodies. Grips are about it and I highly recommend the Hogue rubber grips.
also check out the new 1911 that Taurus puts out the sportsmans warehouse here in town has a blue one with crimson trace grips for $600+ tax or 575 plain in stainless will most likely be picking one up in a few weeks
STAY AWAY FROM HI-POINT!!!
i bought one when i was just starting out and had nothing but problems with it. the bullet got stuck in the barrel twice, you can only fire about 3 rounds before it jams, and they weigh a ton. save up your money and spend it on a good quality pistol. i have 2 taurus handguns, one in .44 mag and one 9mm, and love them both. plus the price is pretty nice.

I encourage you to look at the Beretta PX4 in the .40 S&W. This is my chosen sidearm and I can tell you from my experience that this weapon functions flawlessly.
I selected the Type G which is single action / double action /de-****er / ambidextrous mag release / no safety. The magazine capacity is 14 +1.
This weapon is very well balanced, light weight, easy to control during recoil, and most importantly it's accurate.
I believe you can find it new for around 5 bills.

Hi-points are garbage. the safest place any where near one of those is directly in front of it three people I know have blown these things up all of them shooting factory ammo, I would not use a hi-point as a paper weight. Taurus is a good in-expensive gun as is the EAA witness, baby eagle, and and if you can find one I have had llamas in the past they were well built accurate guns and I still have one of them I just cant seem to part with it it is a half scale 1911 in .380 cute as hell and more reliable than my damm colt gvmt. model .380
I know its out of your price range but my managers buying this gun. I cant wait to shoot it. Keltek PLR 16. It shoots M16 bullets.

If you're looking for something with knockdown power, there are a ton of different .45 Auto's out there. The Ruger p90 is $419 at Academy Sports.
I personally have 2x9 mm (Beretta 92 FS and a WWI-era Luger) and a couple of other, smaller pistols. I've shot several more (including the Glocks). I hated the only Taurus I've shot (9mm Millenium Pro). Glocks shoot well but I don't like the trigger safety with kids in the house. For home defense I recommend a Remington 870 with an 18" barrel!

Don't get a sigma, they are crap. Don't get a Hi-Point, they are less than crap. Glocks are OK but I don't like the accuracy on them. A
Springfield XD .40 or .45 will get you in your price range and you can't beat em. I've put over 5000 rounds through my duty weapon(XD in .45) and have yet to have a misfire. I've put over 2500 rounds through my backup(XD in .40 S&W) and no misfire.

Hey guys just to change the subject a little bit. I have a chance to buy a Remington 1100 12 guage. Does anyone know anything about this gun? I heard you cant shoot low brass shells? So are they decent guns? Its in real good shape too. What would be a good price to offer? Thanks for any comments!!!

Guitarman, I'd go with the Springfield XD in .40 or .45!! I've researched them quite a bit, they are excellent field guns and are very accurate. You should be able to get one for around $400-$500 with all the accessories. You can find them sold in a package with 2 mags, holster, & mag holder.
For the money, you can't beat them...........Like previous posters said, I would stay away from Hi-point and other cheaper guns.
If you are looking for a good deal, check out online gun auctions like www.gunbroker.com or www.auctionarms.com. I recently bought a pistol on gunbroker. I wanted a good revolver, I found a Taurus .357 stainless 6" barrel new for $350. If you bought one retail, it would cost $450-$550 easy.
When I was looking for my gun, I notices alot of Springfield XD's for sale......
Check out the auctions, they are easy to deal with. All you have to do is find a local gun dealer that is has a FFL license that does gun transfers, contact them first to find out how much they charge. Usually they only charge $15 - $20 per gun, then if you get a gun online, all you have to do is get the dealer to fax their FFL and info to the gun seller and the seller ships the gun to your local dealer and you go and pick up the gun. Depending on your local laws, your local dealer will probably have to do some sort of background check. Here in TX, it only took me about 10 minutes to do the background check.......

Or maybe just letting up after a warning shot? jeez.
+2 on the Springfield XD. To me, the grip angle is much better than the Glock, but that is a personal preference. I also have a Kahr {PM9} and it also is a very good, albeit expensive weapon. I would recommend you going to the range and trying {renting} various weapons before you buy them. You also might look at the XD-9 9mm. The ammo for a 9mm can be bought quite a bit cheaper than the 40 or 45.
