Land... meh... after owning a home with a huge yard and the work that goes along with it, I'm undecided on how much land I want. Small backyard with a big inground pool sounds nice to me.
Lots of land restrictions - FU, I also despise HOA's & there outragous dues. (This will be the biggest challenge if I want to live in Cary).

I was down in NC the first time this past February... yeah, I could get used to that.
You might want to check into the north part of Raleigh, maybe even as far up as Wake Forrest area.

It'll be a little further of a drive to downtown, that's where most of the decent bars are. On the plus side, you'll be closer to Falls Lake, which is great for boating/jet skiing when the water is high enough, which is most of the time. You also more likely to avoid HOAs up there, or at least they'll be more reasonable, ie no storing rusted out cars in the front yard type deal. There are also a couple of golf courses up that way.

You might have a tough time finding a house with an inground pool. I don't know many houses are here that have them, unless you're talking about a really expensive house. Then you'll find some in N. Raleigh, probably Cary too.

Wake Forrest looked like a great place for a murder. That place was a sheet hole. There were subs closer to downtown that looked nice. One golf course community that looked do-able, with walk on privileges.. yay!

More than likely I'll get a house w/o a pool and add later if I so desire.

Thanks for all the input!

There are some beautiful neighborhoods in north Raleigh. My wife's cousin lives up that way, and many of the developments are comparable in quality and home size to what you see in Cary. I've heard prices are pretty simlar to Cary for some of the better northern Raleigh neighborhoods. The affluent folks that don't like Cary definitelly have options.

Some of the Cary resentment is pretty funny, though. From an outisder's persepective, it smells a little like jealously. (Callin' it like I see it).

Even though many homesites are big in NC, they are often sloping and not so well suited for pools.

My sister lives in a typical tract in Wake Forest. Nothing special at all. My parents retired to a nice neighborhood in Garner, SE of Raleigh. Very laid back, nothing close to them, but they got a nice home for the money (about 1/4 the price of what they sold their San Francisco East Bay home for).

That's one hell of a bump! This thread makes me lonely for the good old days. Yes, I'm still here only under a different username. They said if I kept my nose clean I could stay!
