Most of friends try to find a wife they can pass the paperwork/bill paying off to.

I'll be looking to do the same.

It was a no brainer when we got married, both as poor as church mice.
"I'll buy the beans and you buy the bread" is just crazy talk.

We have an unwritten rule that neither spends over $100 without advise/consent of the other. If either of us walks in the door with a higher pricetag item then the other will shoot up an eyebrow and apologies are in order.

Of course we were 21 when we married. Two mature adults with their own unique financial situations may be better off to keep it seperate.

Whatever works.

I am not married, not even getting close so I may be WAY off here..

A have always thought that people make the family budget much more complicated than it needs to be. I thought out a plan if I ever get married that looks perfect on paper to me, lets see if what yall think.

For simplicity lets say the husband makes 60k and the wife 40k. Since the husband makes 60% of the overall family income he is responsible for 60% of the family bills. The household bills should be devided and the husband pays those bills out of his personal account. The wife would be responsible for the other 40% and pay those from her personal account.

Both should have seperate 401k's and investing would be discussed and a % would be agreed to that both would invest in a retirment plan. Last 5% of the paycheckes from both people should go into a account to spend on going out, vacations and such.

The remaining money left at the end of the month could be spent however the person see's fit.

Spousal trust issues aside...

Imagine keeping your account balance up to date with two people making transactions from the same account day in and day out. Especially when primarily using a debit card (I haven't written a personal check in years, no account register on hand).

What we do is keep separate accounts, but we both have access to each others. In effect, we have two joint accounts where each is responsible for only one. I spend out of mine, she spends out of hers. My paycheck is deposited into mine, and money is transferred online as necessary according to the budget.

I understand where you're coming from, but you aren't partners in a business relationship...

the most important thing is marrying a woman who is good with her finances.if she chooses to go and buy yet another pair of shoes rather than pay the electric bill.... forget it cant marry her. i think credit reports should be shared before anyone says " i do"

Heres a little story for you to learn from. My wife and I opened up a Target card. We have been living on my good credit graces getting high credit over $5,000 on all of our accounts.

So, I check the mail the other day... and Bam theres $470.00 bucks on our target card. I look on our USAA card, bam theres $300.00 bucks on that....

I ask her what she spent so much money on?

She said throw pillows for our couch 2 curtains and a curtain rod.

Listen gentlemen.. five pillows cost me.... 130.00 $$$$ !!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF !?

SAVE ALL YOUR MONEY. HIDE IT !

If you must open a joint account open it with the bank you use and have so much transfered from your account.

Or go hang yourself immediately.
