Anyone recommend a Navigation system

Anyone own a Navigation system??. I really do not need one for my everyday commute and regular driving, but there is that trip you take out of state or your just looking for a address or buisness, doctors etc..I was driving with someone today and they had a Garmin and it was really neat, It was pretty pricey though, I don't think that I need all the bells and whistles that he had. I am looking to spend anywhere from $250 to $300 any suggestions. Like I said I will only use the thing every blue moon. I am open to any cheaper suggestions. Thanks guys

There was a thread a few weeks, or maybe a couple months back about this same topic. I'd look into a TomTom. I bought my fiance a TomTom 1 from Best Buy last black friday for like 200$. She loves it and uses it everyday (she gets lost a lot...)

I have the Garmin Nuvi 200W, with the 4.3" widescreen display.

Was $250 at Christmas time, in Wal-Mart this past Friday, it was $219.

Some of the new Garmin models (or higher model numbers) are really fancy, to inclue XM Nav/Traffic, way points, and stret names:

Ex. "Turn right on Preston Road" rather than merely saying, "Turn right".

I've been happy with mine.

I also saw the Garmin 200 (3" non wide screen) was $168.00. Not bad at all.

It's led me astray 2 - 3 times, but once was not really it's fault (road construction), but I'd say the Garmin unit's database is about 98% accurate.

What would be cool is if when faced with something like that, you could push a button, and ask for an alternative route- rather than driving on, and having it force you to try to take the prefered road (which may or may not be accessible), before it eventually recalculates another path.

Thanks Hersh. I was also looking at the Nuvi 200W a few minutes ago. I think this may be the one I get. It is in the ball park of what I want to pay and is a larger screen. I glad you mentioned that you have this one and like it. Thanks again..

I have the standard width Garmin 200. Paid about $180 for it, and it works like a champ. It's about as user friendly and idiot proof as they come.

I like my AVIC-D3. A little out of your pre-set price range at $599, but well worth it IMO for the iPod integration, nav, dvd, radio, etc...

Do you live in Dallas? Preston road gave it away.

Do yourself a favor and buy a Garmin; you will not regret it.
I've tested 7 units in the last 2 months, and for a week, I used a TomTom 930 and a Garmin 760 beside each other.

The Garmin is the better unit IMHO.

Whatever one you buy, make sure it comes with the newest map update already installed.
My Garmin came with the 2008 update, but they allowed me to download the 2009 update for free as long as I did it within 30 days.

Most of the Garmins include the 2009 update, but just check to be sure.

I think the costco.com site has the Garmin 760 on for $359 which is a heck of a deal considering it is one of their top units.

PS --> I loved tomtom before I tried a Garmin.

I would probably go this route, but I am getting a new car or truck in 09 when my lease is up on my wife's Expy. I think I am going to get SYNC and the factory navigation in the next truck or car we get, so I don't want to go to crazy with a unit. Like I said I will hardly use this thing, but it will be nice to have one laying around for that road trip to the unknown!!!. Thanks for the tip, I will check out the unit you have..

I don't know about the other models, but the Garmin Nuvi 760 has a "Detour" Button. You press it as soon as you are aware of the upcoming detour, and it will recalculate a new route right away.

Good luck finding one. They've been discontinued for a ~month.
