Extracting .bin files ??

Alright guys I need some computer help. Someone told me in my other thread about wireless routers that I should try updating my firmware on my Linksys Wireless Router. Well I followed their link and did all of the stuff. My model is the WRK54G. Anyways, I downloaded the firmware but I can't extract the file. I downloaded Winzip, it didn't work. I downloaded this program called AlZip and when I try to extract the files I get a message saying "Error: Invalid Archive". I can't update the firmware without extracting the files so can someone help me out? I'm getting my internet speed increased today after 5:00 so I wanted to update the firmware before to see if it helps.

Burn it

You need to burn the file to a CD using Nero or a program that will can create ISO (image) CDs. The following links give a brief explanation of the .BIN files and how to use them.

I hope these help!
Good luck with the back!

Ya but the file needs to be extracted first.

Needs to be extracted from what? a .ZIP file? If so, the builtin XP unzipper or Winzip will work fine, if you are getting an error, you have a corrupt download, try again.

If it is already a .bin you do not need to extract it.

It wouldn't work. I bought a D-Link N Router. I wanted to switch to N and this gave me an excuse.

This is correct. Open it with your cd burning software such as Roxio or Nero or similar. Or you can mount it (like burning to cd but instead of a cd it's your hard drive) to your hard drive using something like Power ISO or similar. Then just use the cd you burned to install whatever it is you're installing. There should be another file with the .bin. The .bin file instructs the burning software on what to do with the other file.

the other file you mention is a .cue file and it's opposite what you said. The .bin is the files and the .cue tells your burning software what to do. Something like that. At least that's how it works with movies. If this is different and I'm wrong then it won't be the first time.

I just checked the Linksys site (but this is now a moot point) - the firmware file does in fact download as a .bin, nothing has to be extracted. The .bin is used directly in the firmware updating utility, it is not any kind of image that has to be extracted such as an .iso or .bin/.cue pair.

Smart move, Thump - the WRK54G is a POS. It's a stripped and cheapened WRT54G, it even only has one antenna. It's a weakling.

I tried to update it with that file and it wouldn't work it came up with an error. I searched on google and found a bunch of people with the same problem. I didn't think I was doing something wrong until a retard at Linksys told me it needed to be extracted ... than offered me to buy a extended service plan for $40 so they could walk me through it. I said I can buy a new router for $20 more and he didn't have much to say.

No it won't. Firmware .bin files are already extracted.

Heh. Yeah same here. I always get it backwards without looking at it. I just open the one that's smallest. But apparently it doesn't matter because this entire situation is different.
