If it comes to the point at which we need forces that large to attack Russia or China they could just nuke us and I'm sure they would as it's the same exact thing we would do.

Like I mentioned, it'd be MAD (mutually assured destruction) if war were to erupt with another super power. All world economies would collapse (except for tribesmen in Africa) and major cities would be destroyed. It would make WWII look like someone sneezed in Europe.
Hence why we need the stealth jets, and lots of them. Preparedness.

Cool!
Yes. It's tough being atop as the world's superpower. Especially when people complain without merit over the aquisition of 5th generation multirole stealth fighter jets, and then will still complain without merit when we're getting beaten down when those same fighter jets aren't available for future battle.

If we ever ended up in a full scale real war it'd be nuclear and the world would end at the push of a couple of buttons.

Just like Shines, Risupercrew, I think Scott, and others have said. You're the only one pushing outdated war strategies.
They're not outdated war strategies when we'll be using 5th generation fighters. You are ignorant to how the modern air force is going to work, and it shows. Do some research. You're the one stuck in the past.

Anyway, this thread should be union bashing and not military strategy discussion.
That's why we are going to have LESS fighters in the modern Air Force once the old planes are retired, replaced with MORE capable multi-role fighters. More with less. What about that doesn't add up?

The Marines are getting 5th generation stealth fighters as well. How irrelevant is that?

No war can be won without superior Air Forces. Thinking otherwise is moronic.

I agree with preparedness as Stealth mentioned.
I agree with "not so many" as Crazed mentioned.

We shouldn't need a "ton" of 5Gens, but who's really to say what is enough?!

As for a nuclear WW3... if any nation is stupid enough to use nukes against another nation, the world will cease to exist. They shoot at us, we shoot at them, their allies shoot at us, our allies shoot at their allies, etc., so forth and so on... Unwinable war.
And if there is WW3, the warheads will be delivered by nuclear subs and/or stealth destroyers... possibly some will come from certain, unknown space platform(s).

Stealth fighters are and will be used as a first strike tool. Wipe out SAM's and the like so that the workhorses can come in. And by workhorses, I'm referring yet once again to the Stratofortress. You cannot count out a military aircraft that's looking to be in service for another 32 years, after already being in service since 1955.

85 years in service kinda blows the whole "30+ year old fighters are falling from the sky" theory outta the water huh.

And I am tickled by the 50 year plane comment. Those things really do rock. "Don't build 'em like they used to" seems to come to mind.
If you're referring to the B-52... reread. 85 year service!

F-35 tidbits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-35_Lightning_II

http://www.defencetalk.com/news/publ...s100015685.php

The F-35 is a supersonic, multi-role, 5th generation stealth fighter. Three F-35 variants derived from a common design, developed together and using the same sustainment infrastructure worldwide will replace at least 13 types of aircraft for 11 nations initially, making the Lightning II the most economical fighter program in history.
Now tell me having a fleet of these is a waste of money.

I was staying out of this.. but WOW.. what ignorance! The Air Force is STILL using our tech against enemies in Iraq. Very effectively. We can put a bomb thru a window. We can kill JUST the enemies. Not civilians. Unheard of until now. The Air Force is needed now more than ever. The ground troops rely on them to keep them safe. There NEVER can be to many airplanes. Go in to win. Second place is the looser. You have heard it before. Overwhelming force keeps enemies at bay. We spend far less on defense than we do to support illegal aliens. Save money in a meaningful way... get rid of dumbocrats and republicans who give our money away with socialist programs. In the mean time, protect our citizens.

I guess CrAz3D is speechless, or he's studying for exams.
