Motorists shifting from trucks to cars

http://www.detroitnews.com/apps/pbcs...805020384/1148
Passenger cars outsold light trucks last month for the first time in at least two decades as soaring gasoline prices sent consumers scrambling to more fuel-efficient vehicles.

That dealt a major blow to Detroit's Big Three automakers, which are still heavily dependent on sales of trucks and SUVs.
Ford Motor Co. posted the smallest decline among the Detroit manufacturers. Including its foreign brands, Ford's sales fell 12.1 percent, from 227,431 vehicles to 200,007, dropping its share of the market to 16 percent.
"Out of the Detroit Three, Ford is probably the best positioned right now."

That is because it has a stronger lineup of small cars and crossovers, with more in the pipeline.

"In 2004, 70 percent of Ford's retail sales were trucks and sport utility vehicles," said George Pipas, head of sales analysis and reporting at Ford. "In April, 62 percent of our sales in the United States were passenger cars and crossovers."

Consumers are not just downsizing, they are downsizing in a big way.

According to Pipas, a survey of data for all manufacturers shows that at least one pickup is on the top-10 trade-in list for nearly every small car model.

No vehicle exemplifies this shift more than the Ford Focus. Retail sales of the subcompact were up 88 percent in April over the same period last year, prompting Ford to increase output out its Wayne Assembly Plant.

Jim Farley, head of sales and marketing for the Dearborn automaker, said those gains came without resorting to big incentives. The average transaction price for the compact actually increased, he said.
Its interesting to note that not all that long ago everyone said that Ford was on the verge of going bankrupt and was in big trouble and now they are saying that Ford is positioned the best of all the American automakers to weather these tough times...

Yep, and even if fuel gets to $10 a gallon there will still be a market for Super Dutys - you can't haul construction equipment with a Focus. All this is driving out of the truck market are people who don't NEED a truck - they only buy them because they LIKE them.

That's me. I don't use mine for anything but going to work and back, but I LIKE mine a lot and will not be giving it up for some small compact just to save some money on gas.

Ford all in all had a good month. They still sold over 40,000 trucks and still sold quit a few large SUV's. In the first quarter the new Focus is up 88% from 07 and sold nearly 24,000 unit in April. Also the Fushion, Millian, Escape, Marriener, Edge, MKX were up in sales. The Explorer took a big dive and so did the Expediton, but they still sold quit a few of these models for the big scare of gas prices. For me I will never drive anything other than a truck, If I have to pay I will pay, I don't care.

That ad with those guys driving from Eloy to L.A. on one tank of gas is certainly not hurting Focus sales. I can do that too - but I have a 25 gallon tank.

I hate to dis on the focus... I have a 2005 ST, and we bought the wife a 2008 SES with the sync. I like my 2005 WAY better. Her car is put together well, quality isn't the issue. She gets 35 highway with her 2008, I have gotten 36 highway with my ST that is the performance model... epa rated at 31 highway. Go figure. Mine is a lot more fun to drive too. with more HP and no stupid throttle by wire, mine is responsive. Hers is dull. On the plus, her 2008 is quieter to ride in. Hers is blue by the way lol.

I am glad I got my F150.

I don't care about gas. I got stable income, and an education, and a will to want to succeed in life. With that brings money to pay for gas or possibly diesel in the future.

I use my truck - but not enough to keep it if it becomes impossible to drive. I'm in the market for a new bike so I don't have to get rid of the truck. I think it's going to become a commodity, and may be in my family for a long time to come with fairly low miles.

I don't think you could make it. I could probably make it to Tucson from San Diego but I always get scared of having to stop once I'm in traffic so I always stop in the middle. Considering LA is further away and more importantly the traffic, it just can't be done. However this is driving at 80 mph. If you drove the speed limit you might be able to make it, but it would take another 2 or 3 hours to get there. I think I have a 30 gallon tank.

I like you guys but if your this "educated" then one would think you should be somwehat concerened about gas and doing something to use a bit less and not be wasteful and save a few bucks doing so. I HAVE stable income also and i drive something smaller to work and back and use the F-150 on the weekends for hauling crap around.

Just some food for thought.

I like driving my truck...

I can't drive a car... I might end up in an accident because they are too difficult to drive. Front wheel drive is impossible for me to drive.

Only gas guzzling cars come with rear wheel drive.

dont plan on trading in the truck, and even if i did it would be for a mustang or camaro with a v8. if gas gets even higher i'll just start saving for a motorcycle quicker.

I think your not seeing my point here, Your educated you said so in your previous post. I would think if my grand mommy can drive a front wheel drive you could also muster up the courage to do the same. How about a smaller 4x4 then??. If we as Americans keep wasting and wasting there will be little left for our children or their children. Its time to open your young eyes and see.
