I have yet to see someone claim they get 50mpg with any hybrid @ sustained 75-80mph. As mentioned, hybrids' advantage is in the city when the engine can be shut off to use zero fuel for a short period of time, electric only. If someone is eeking out the fuel ecomony driving 55mph in the slow lane getting 55mph, great for him (but stay in the slow lane)! I would not drive 70 miles twice a day @ those speeds. My time is worth more to me than $2/day in fuel.

European cars that get 80mpg don't pass US safety or emissions regs either, so why were they brought up? I sure as heck wouldn't put my family in one either. At least my off topic vehicle is readily available in the states.
I referenced Euro diesels because companies have been advancing diesel technology, even if they are not availible in the US. To sell the same vehicle, the vehicle would not get 80mpg. I realize this, but they won't get 40mpg either. Somewhere in between.

If you have a great Ford dealer, the Focus is probably your best choice. You should get at least 30 mpg real world in your commute.

I know, but 30 is pretty **** poor if you ask me. If they can convince me that i could get consistent 35 MGP I would probably go with a Focus or Fusion.

At 30 MPG I might as well keep my paid off Montero that gets 18-19. I am just really sick of giving all this money to gas companies. I know I would probably spend less keeping the old SUV but if it's only a little more a month i would rather give it to fledgling American car company than the gas company A holes.

That is the only way to get gas prices down. Use less gas. And the only way I can do that now is buy a different car.

We did that, so then they make less gas to keep the price where they want it. If we all got 100mpg cars they can adjust the output and keep up paying the same per fill up. It is an ugly mess any way you cut it.

The US uses more gasoline now that it ever has in it's history. We use more than we did last year, we use more than we did 10 years ago. We use more than we did 25 years ago.

They keep raising prices and we keep using more gas.

I heard on the radio a month or two ago that since demand was lower than predicted so OPEC had a meeting and lowered production, a price spike resulted. It is simple supply and demand, as long as the consumer doesn't have an alternative when demand goes down they can adjust supply to keep the price how they like it and help their wells last longer.

Once apoun a time they would call it a monopoly.

If you drive 70-75, I think 30 MPG is actually excellent and you aren't going to do much better without seriously compromising comfort and safety.

30 mpg was excellent for 1985.

all i'm saying is the car companies should be able to do better. Like i said previously. I got 34mpg in my 94 grand am GT with a 3.1L V6. And now they are bragging up 35mpg?

A 94 GA GT (I had a 92) weighed 600 pounds less than the current G6. You wouldn't want to see a 94 GA tested by IIHS.

If your goal is to give less money to big oil companies, get some kind of diesel vehicle an convert it to run on vegetable oil. Nothing like the smell of french fries coming out of your tailpipe.

My lady has the 08 and she's getting more than 30. She's averaging around 35-38 on the highway depending on speed.

That is what my college roomate said he got with '03 2.0 5-speed. He really liked it, I drove it once and I could make it work.
