OK, where you pull the yolk out, won't there be a hole in the middle of that seal (the circumference of the shaft) that will allow water and dirt to get in and grease to slosh out?

All the sticks out past the seal, is a splined shaft

You were supposed to take the driveshaft out, not the handles off!

yes, and can lock/unlock it from the outside, so make sure you set your alarm
