Yeah it's an art form more than it's a science and once in a while you get a tree that does the exact opposite or what you think it's going to do. I had one this past weekend that looked like it would fall one direction but once I was making the final cut it came back and pinched the bar of the saw. Luckily it was small enough for us to push the direction we wanted it to fall.

back when I was 7 I learned how to use one....we were living in wisconsin at the time and using wood as the only heat source.

my dad had just gotten his leg almost cut off from a freakish kick back from cutting up logs for splitting....my mom didn't want to have anything to do with that saw after the accident. so it was left up to us kids to get the wood cut up....our neighbor(retired US Forest Service) came over and taught us kids what to do, how to fall trees and get them cut and split...my brother(5) and I(7) grew up quick that winter....that spring we preppped and planted crops for that year...

I find it really interesting how some of us grew up in different parts of the country or our friends for that matter. I was 5 or 6 when I started helping my dad split wood he would cut it up and put it on the splitter for me and I would split it then move the split logs. I learned to use a chain saw when I was big enough to run it safely and I've been dropping tree's on my own since I was in my mid 20's. I get strange looks from some of my friends when I tell them what I do on weekends that I consider to fun and relaxing.

Hell! You should have seen the looks I got when I told people that I made Heather's birthday present and she was tickled pink when I gave it to her. I made her a coal and ash rake for her wood boiler because she was a long stick to rake out the coal bed and move logs around

The bed of coals in a wood stove. It would be very uncomfortable if you laid down on it and why doesn't it surprise me that you're thinking about sleep.
