When this happens you are polluting the environment and wasting money spent on fuel that you are not using. Fuel vapors are toxic and bad for your health. Overfilling can also cause your car’s fuel vapor system not to work properly. Besides, your tank needs additional space for fuel to expand. To avoid any potentially hazardous situations, stop fueling when the pump clicks the first time.

The closed positive ventilation and vapor recovery system needs a certain amount of compressible air volume or free surface area to operate properly. Completely filling the tank may force fuel into the vapor recovery reservoir and might damage the fuel pump or make the car stall or run poorly. I think most gas caps do have a vent to let air into the tank to replace the fuel that is sucked out but, the hole is so small that it doesn't really play a big role while the car is running. Also, the fuel from the underground gas tanks at the gas station is colder than the air in summer and can expand and leak through the gas cap vent causing a strong fuel smell or even a small fuel spill.
I don't spill it so the first one is out. Second one, I don't know. I fill it to the baffle in there, where I can visually see the gas, not to the outside lip.

When you fill past the overflow inlet into the filler tube is what can cause damage to the evap system.....circled in pic

Just got a call from the tire shop, they said my right hand tie rod and ball joints were shot and the only way they felt comfortable giving me the truck back was fixing it. The truck was going to go in next week for ball joints and axle joints any ways so it just means I am only going to be with out my truck for one day and not two.

Well, I have done that with every fillup for 6 years, so I have either destroyed it or I'm not going high enough to be a problem.

168k on the original fron end parts, I am not going to complain at all. You weren't going to find me tromping through that snow bank to get the loader. Plus people drive like idiots in the snow up here so I would rather replace the tie rod every year than hear the crash as some moron texting and driving on a snowy road plowed into the back end of my truck at 65mph. And if they survied the crash they probably not survive me........

Well, I get a new hub on the front axle one of them was almost completely frozen in place and would not have engaged this fall if I would have needed the four wheel drive. Wonder what else they are going to find??
