There is a very low failure rate, but for the most part spraying them and waiting about 10 seconds will usually cause a suspect to give up, sometimes very rear a mentally illed person will no be effected by the O/C spary.
The best way to describe it is it feels like a nasty sunburn. Initially, you don't feel it for a few minutes, and can give someone a beat down. When I got hit, we had to chase down a suspect, disarm him, cuff him, and search him. I did all that before it really kicked in. But that was me, others went to their knees immediately. Then came the mucus, tears, and searing burning sensation. But it was over after about 10 minutes. Then it felt like my face was the victim of a 8 hour drunken nap on the beach in the sun.
Remember, it's mostly a shock weapon. I believe the word I'm looking for is "avatism". The fear of pain is worse than the actual pain.

I have never been sprayed in the face with pepper spray or anything like it but I did go through the gas chamber in the Navy and man was that rough. I should have known it was gonna be bad when the RDC's said to cup your hand under your chin when you took your gas mask off.
I'd rather be tazed 10 times than pepper sprayed once. I'm one of those guys who can't function with PS. When the instructor hit me he SAID he was going to spray across my eyebrows. Well his aim must not be worth crap because I felt the stream go across both my eyeballs. And to make things worse I gasped for air and it went down my lungs. I couldn't breathe for 10 minutes. It did teach me one thing though... Come at me with pepper spray and I'll put two in your chest and one in your head.

I just found that really funny...And yes, it does suck and certainly something I don't want to relive...Even if it was the over the counter strength Pepper Spray as opposed to the stronger kind used in the Militrary and Law Enforcement...
Yep, like smokey above, I'd take many tazes over OC. I are fair skinned and blonde for the most part so I don't take it well either. I can still function, but it really pisses me off, so the perp usually gets it worse than if he'd complied to start off with.
Samolian's are not affected by OC. Everybody else is to a certain degree.
I'm just glad my department didn't make us get shot by the .40 to see how we would react!

I've been in the CS chamber and O/Ced with 2 mil shu for military training. CS was kinda rough, gave me spaghetti nose and made breathing tough. The O/C was administered as a level one exposure (there's 3) in the summer, 90 degrees in IN. Followed by a combatives course you had to complete under the effects. The O/C sucked by far and I would take CS anyday to avoid O/C.
Know this, apparently drugs can change the affect of the PS. I watched this huge guy take it straight in the face, beat down two cops. third showed up and they managed to subdue him He continued to fight to the squad car and got hit again. They said he got hit again at the police station and it never affected him. Found out he was on some serious drugs apparently.
Yup, PS is a pain compliance tool. If you're on enough pain reducing/blocking drugs it has no effect. But tasers effect your central nervous system and your large muscles. No amount of drugs can have an effect.
