I was taught by my Dad back in the '60s to never have two vehicles running connected by jumper cables, it will cause damage to diodes and such. Even a few secs is enough to damage.
Assuming both have a negative ground here ...but check in use.
Before connecting both vehicles together, make sure NO engine is RUNNING.
Hook + to good battery, hook other + to dead battery, hook - to good battery, hook other - to frame or grounded part of veh away from battery.
If just a battery jump won't start the vehicle with dead battery, disconnect, shut your hood, leave.

I've seen people who should know better, connect while leaving one running. Invariably, a dead alternator will result.

I use a lithium jump starter.

I've actually owned several.

This is the best one that I have found.
