Hyundai, to offer Mustang Beater?

Hyundai recently unveiled a car called the Genesis Coupe concept, which insiders say may be the new Tiburon.

Rumored to have 300 HP, and RWD, and a price tag in the low 20's, Hyundai aims to beat the Ford Mustang at its own game- according to the January issue of Car & Driver Magazine.

They would have stuffed in the Hyundai Genesis (Sedan) V-8 in, if they could, but with the sloping hoodline, it would not fit. So, Hyundai massaged their 3.7L V6 until it produced 300 HP, and 285 lb/ft. of torque. If I remember the numbers correctly, they estimate it'll go 0 - 60 in less than six seconds, putting it squarely in Mustang GT territory.

And, to show Hyundai is serious (I've said for years Hyundai sold some hot cars in Korea, that they didn't sell in the US for some reason) look at how classy their Genesis Sedan looks:

The Genesis Sedan looks like a sexier Maxima. Something I'd imagine an Infiniti I-35 would have looked like- if Infiniti saw fit to build one.

Anyhoo, here is the proposed Mustang beater: While it probably won't outrun a Mustang GT, with a V-6 it'll probably be cheaper to insure than the Pony, and with 300 HP and RWD, it'll be just as much fun to drive, while being easier on the pocket.

Slap an intercooled turbo on it and it's game over.

Thats sharp! I had a Tiburon for a little while and loved it. Great car. No problems and cheap to drive.

I'd buy another Hyundai for sure.

i owned a hyundai accent for 4 years..... believe me.... you don't want one.
(the only reason i bought it was my car had 187,000 miles on it and my company relocated putting my daily drive at 50 miles...so i needed a car....( i ended up moving closer to work 6 months later)... but the hyundai was my sister in-laws with 7k miles, 2 years old and all she wanted was for me to take over her payments (1 year left).... so i bought it.

comments:
slow as mollassas
absolutley no torque
build qaulity was garbage
- door handle broke
- rear hatch plastic panel broke off
- oil pan leaked like a sive
- the thing ate brakes and spark plug wires for some reason
- when it was below 10* it sounded like a sewing machine exploded under the hood when you started it....

it always started though....

oaw

Can you say no personality? Something about the looks of basically everything Asian sucks imo. I'd bet it has a 5 year run and dies out. That ain't a Mustang beater.......more like another Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Seeing them side by side like that, same color... The Tiburon/Genesis Coupe- looks better...

Sorry...

My wife's cousin has a Hyundai Accent. It's been hit horribly, twice- and that joker still runs.

yes and that one there looks about 100% street model. The orange one looks like a concept, that silver one is ready to drive off the platform into someones garage
