I have discovered ice . . .

And it's slippery.

And gravity, in conjunction with ice, leads to pain.

That is all.

It does tend to do that. Get yourself some of these:

YakTrax:

Or these:

The Get-a-grips work better on ice as the carbide studs grip in. The YakTrax have a tendency to roll on ice but they work good if there is a bit of snow on top of the ice.

Close. At midnight we start getting a lot of lightning and thunder. After reading PSS-Mag's posting of the weather service's bulletin saying that there will be massive ice storms, I decide to go out and see what that is like.

I go out on the front porch and it's raining outside. I don't see any snow. It sounds like rain drops, it looks wet. So I decide to walk out to the lawn. There are four concrete steps down to the yard. I step onto the top step and . . . discover the hard way that it's covered with ice. Lucky I didn't break anything, but did scrape myself up pretty good.

Yes. I'm an idiot, but this is how we learn.

Meanwhile, the storm still continues and outside now it's all ice and slush. The trees are covered in ice and starting to drop icicles.

Picture doesn't show it very well, but all the branches are encased in ice.

It is raining but turns to ice on the ground. My hair was frozen in spots when I came back in.

And Rose, I slipped on the steps while wearing my running shoes (Asics). When I went back out I had on hiking boots (and walked gingerly)

When I was out taking pix and seeing what this frozen rain/ice storm thing is like (hey, I gotta experience it first hand), a truck drove by the house . . . very slowly. As a noob, I will hold off on the driving in this stuff as long as I can.

Ah, I was going to post "I betcha he slipped on the steps", but then I saw your reply. Concrete steps freeze up very fast. Be careful Kobi. We've still gotta do dinner, so just make it til then...

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

When I said an ice storm was rain that froze on the ground and covered everything with ice. I assumed that implied that everything would be slick.

I was just outside in my moccasins and it hasn't hit here yet. Maybe I'll luck out and the artic trough will stay over there with you.

Now just so you can be prepared, that ice encased branch(s) will continue to get further and further encased in ice as percip continues to fall and freeze on it. I don't have to tell you the weight of water, it is heavy. So as more ice accumulates those branches begin to sag and bend, possibly start breaking. That same accumulation is accumulating on the power lines too. They to get heavy, sag and break, or branches fall on them and break them.

The other stuff including hardships it brings you'll just have to discover. Most are common sense and easy to figure out a solution.

One warning: DO NOT... I repeat.... DO NOT, pour hot water on your doors to thaw the ice to get them open!
Use heet,, de-icer, other isopropyl alcohol based products or isopropyl alcohol it's self.

Well, in my defense (of which there probably is none), it had just started raining only minutes before. And when I went out on the porch, I could see RAIN, and hear the SPLASH of RAIN, which is the Official Sound of Wet™ (as defined by the Council of Wetness™ out in Geneva, Switzerland).

Hey, look, I may of had a Mountaineer Moment™, but I'm not totally retarded.

(unless, of course, I am)

Mountaineer Moments™ do not cause permanent brain damage, nor do they cause the ability to draw logical conclusions to cease. (current experience excepted).

Yeah, I remember reading this in this exact forum last winter.

Fun stuff!

I'm going out to take pix.

Amazingly, although completely encased in ice, it still works:

And as I type this, it is pouring outside. And the icicles on the trees and the powerlines are getting thicker and longer . . . .

Here's the garage as of this morning:

branches this morning but as of now the ice on the branches is much thicker and growing!!!

So PSS-MAG, has it reached you yet? I've already lost power once, but it only lasted a short time.

OR move to South/East Texas. This is West Texas this morning. Not nearly so bad as Kobi's locale, but the roads are in bad shape.

The view from my front porch...

Glad I got the lights up yesterday.
