To each their own I guess.

I see too many punk kids out there that have no respect for other people and authority. Reasoning only goes so far.

Come on guys Time Outs work just as good. Just kidding!! We all have friends or family members who use time outs or other methods to keep from spanking. These are usually the kids running around, yelling, and acting like undisciplined rug rats. When I was a kid I always had the thought in the back of my mind that I could get a spanking if I did something wrong. It took one spanking from my dad and it was in my mind for the rest of my childhood. You don't have to "abuse" your child when spanking. Will it be illegal to "put the fear of God" in you child next?

Hell no. I can see beating the hell out of them but spanking them to teach them a lesson is different. My parents used to beat my ***. I always had to learn the hard way I'm glad they did though because I wouldn't be near the person I am today with out it.

Children test authority from the moment they can see and hear. They throw tantrums to see how you will react and what the outcome will be of their actions. They establish a pattern. They condition us and find our limits. My little boy could barely walk and wanted to touch the light socket. I said no in a firm voice. He looked at me and stopped. He waited for me to turn or pay attention to something else and he slowly started moving his little hand back to the socket. I could see him through the corner of my eye and he was checking to see if I was paying attention. When I turned he stopped and pretended he was doing somehting else. Sly little bugger. A friend in California said they already passed a law that bans from spanking children 3 and under. I was told you could be jailed for a year. Also if your dog is tied outside on a leash for more than 4 hours you will be charged with a misdemeanor for animal cruelty.(Can't validate these stories for sure) but I was amazed. don't they have something better to come up with? I was spanked when I was smaller and I tell you that the thought of getting in trouble and being spanked again prevented me from doing alot of stupid stuff. We realize this the older we get, and I am actually thankful that I was kept in line.

I was spanked with belts, paddles, coat hangers, etc... And most of the time I deserved it. I have kids and very rarely have to spank them, because they are well behaved and I am raising them right. But when I do have to spank them, it's open handed on the rear.

Obviously the line needs to be drawn between spanking and abuse. But my wife and I discussed this and what is an acceptable form of discipline and what is not. A very rare open hand on the **** never hurt anyone, and it can do wonders for a childs behavior WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS.

If I lived in MA and this law was passed, I guess I would be breaking it then the few times that my kids need to be spanked. And I guess I would have a court date. But no-one other myself and my wife is going to dictate what proper punishment is going to be for our children. And honestly, I can't see how any jury in their right mind could convict me of Child abuse, just for spanking my children as I just described.

Well anytime the governent steps in and tells you how to live your life its not going to work out well. IMHO children need consistancy and consequence. The lack of follow through by most parrents help children develop a paradign of thought that it doesnt matter what they do there is no conequence. I am definately not a fan of overt abuse, but three or four good swats to the seat of the pants does the trick.

Discipline is required and children need it, abuse is never acceptable.
Spanking gets their attention. Never spank out of anger.

Its sad when the government tells you how to live, how to displine your kids and has no problem spending your money without giving you an explanation.

Been trying that for a while. Trying to remove IN GOD WE TRUST from currency, ONE NATION UNDER GOD in the pledge of allegiance, not to mention the schools. And people wonder why kids do what they do.

I do not think spankings should be banned. I do think though that children get too old for spankings, especially teenage years. Cell phones, computer access, TV...all great manipulators when it comes to them behaving like civilized humans..now...yes I was whipped growing up...and not once by my father, not because he wasnt around, but because I knew better...if my mom could hurt me like she could with her 5'2 tiny body...my 6ft 200lb dad would be worse . seriously...mom didnt work, dad was in the NAvy, and I was a brat....grew out of it when he got out, but dont think I would have if the spankings werent around..I didnt have computer or tv when I was younger..well we had 1 tv but that was for moms soaps, so I never could watch it during the day (like anything was on) so I was outside playing...and I know she wasnt going to confine me to being inside (she'd have to listen to me ...lol) ...did anyone else ever experience the 2 finger underarm grip of steele?? 2 fingers one in the pit and one the shoulder....no matter how much you squirm or pull you werent getting out of that grip..
