Harley owners...

I know Harley Davidson is a love it or hate it type thing with bikers, and you may just be paying for a name, but I still want one...

I've been toying with the idea of buying a cruiser for several years, and was minutes away from writing the check for a Vulcan last summer after I sold the Stang. I've always thought if I bought new I wanted a Shadow, however the new Boulevards sure look sweet!

I looked at a few Sportsers and such a while back, and they were pricey and just didn't appeal to me. Then the V-Rod came out, and I love the look, but not the price (couldn't afford one back then anyway)...

Well, while reading the new Hot Rod last night I stumbled upon the full page ad for the Night Rod Special, and all of a sudden I wanted a Harley again... bad!

It appears to be just a blacked out V-Rod. I briefly perused the Harley site this morning. You can get it in 2 flavors, but other than colors I couldn't find the real differences...

Just curious... anyone got a V-Rod or a Night Rod (special or not)? I've been thinking lately about giving up on a roadster for now, and focusing on the Belvedere and Camino, and just get a good bike...

either way, nothing happens till I finally get this house finished.

there are about 5 different configs of the vrod...two diff night rods....the all black one is the one you refer to, that is the night rod special...it has forward controls (not allv rods do), small fairing (not all vrods do), 5 gallon tank as some vrods have a 3.8 gallon tank, a stock 280(i think) rear tire other vrods are smaller...there is about 10 diffrences between the night rod spec and the other ones....you have to see them side by side to notice it, and even then you might need a sales person to point them out....

Awful lot of money to tie up in something that you will most likely lose interest in. Aren't you a newly wed per se, building/buying a house and probably going to have children in the near future? Hard to put a baby seat on a bike. Unless you are selling all your cages and are strictly planning to ride everyday, no matter what the weather, go for it. But I have seen it so many times before, you'll be a hobbyist rider and therefore no need to spend that much on a bike. Get a cheap used scooter and see how much you get to ride. Work your way up in a sense! Been there, done it, lost my azz!

I am tempted to get a 883 Sportster... just to go cruising around on. For $99 a month, it's highly tempting.

I doubt I would go out and buy a V-Rod right away. I haven't ridden anything in years, and would probably start out with a used bike, like the Vulcan I almost bought.

As far as not having a baby seat, all the more reason to buy one. 2 seat roadsters/convertibles are not family cars, all the more reason to buy one. I'm looking for a fun vehicle for ME! not the family, not my friends, not my co-workers. I DO NOT LIKE PEOPLE MOVERS. Screw the car pool lane... We bought the Element to haul the family when the time comes.

The wife really wants a bike as much as I do, and I think we'd give it a lot of use. (Most of my friends have bikes, and have been nagging me for years to come ride with them.) Granted that use my fade as children come into the picture, but so are a lot of other things... I'm just weighing my options. I still like the idea of a 2 seat roadster, but when I saw that Night Rod Special I had to think twice about it...

Chick bike..

Closer, you ought to explore all your options. I currently have a 2007 Honda Shadow which I love. I. however, am going to be selling mine and getting a sportbike.

I don't know about you, but I'd much rather pay $6799 than the thousands more it costs for a Harley. I've got pipes on mine and I always get the "What kind of Harley is that?" until they see Honda on the side of it and go "Oh, it's a Honda! It sounds bad ***!" I'm not particularly one to pay so much extra just so I can dress up like the Village People and go hang out with a bunch of doctors, lawyers, and psychiatrists, aka RUBs. (Rich Urban Bikers).

If youre not sure...check out a used Yamaha Roadstar. You can pick up one thats a few years old, and has lots of aftermarket accessories (chrome) for about $8,000. It is the only Jap bike that is a true Vtwin, air cooled and belt driven. Yamaha copied it after the Heritage softtail. The bikes are damn near bullet proof, and if you dont like riding, you can sell it for about $500 less than what you bought it for. Harleys are nice, but you pay for the name. Dont buy a new bike...If ya do, youre gonna take a huge hit when you try to resell it. Pick up a Roadie 1600 or 1700 with less than 10K miles. You wont be dissapointed going this route. If you care what people think, or are just buying a bike to impress someone, get a Harley. That way you can show everyone that you overspent and have a desperate need to be accepted.

Check out the quick search i did on ebay for a Roadie.

Just a few examples. Check out cycle trader and do a search for your area if you are really interested.

As I mentioned earlier, a Shadow has always been the reliable bike I've wanted, however, the Shadow just doesn't look as cool as the Night Rod Special... and if I buy a bike it will be what I want. I would consider myself far from rich or urban, but if people need labels to feel good about themselves...
