No the router will not show up.

There wont be anything in there until you share a folder on the other computer. Before yo ucan do that, then you will have to set up a workgroup on both computers so they can share files back and forth.

To do that, then right click on My computer
Go to properties
Under the "Computer Name" tab at the bottom is a button for "To rename this computer or join a domain, click change.
Click there and give the computer a name you will recognize to identfy it.
Put a dot on workgroup
and name teh work group

Do the same on the second computer.
Different computer name but same workgroup name

Now to share a folder one either computer.
right click on the folder that you want to share
click on properties
click on the sharing tab
put a check mark on "Share this Folder on the Network"
Give teh permission you want teh other computer to have.
Then click OK.

Now that folder will show up in the other computers "network connection" and they can open it and if you gave them permison can make changes to it too. Or if not can copy it to thier computer and make changes to save on thier own computer with out changing your file. Or waht ever needs to be done.

Then on the other computer you'll have to go in and share any folder you want the first one to see and or beable to change.

Cable is a new road for me so be patient but I'll work on it with you tonight until you get tired. Hopefully GLC will chime in and save the day.... err night.

Try this for me.....

go start>run
type: cmd
hit enter

when the box comes up type: ping 192.168.100.1
hit enter on the key board

a bunch of stoff sould come up on the screen. If it says "request timed out" or "server could not be found" then it failed... let me know either way.

Meanwhile I'm going to look for the common set up and make sure that linksys defaults will work and make sure we dont have to change anything in teh modem.....

OK well you are connectin to the modem then..... that was the IP address for the modem that I had you ping.

Hopefully your still up.... unplug the modem from power before yo ugo to bed and then hook it up in the morning.....

If not, then unplug the power for 5 mins in the morning then power everything back up.

I'll keep looking but so far everyone on the other boards I'm surfing trhough are saying plug and play.... hard power down for 5 mins to refresh the IP adress from ISP seems to be the most common solution.

Well thats really all I can find.
It really should be as easy as plugging it in and turning everything on. The only thing we might try is cloning the mac address.

If I'm not up when you get up then to do that....

open web browser
in the adrees bar type 192.168.1.1
hit enter
a box will pop up asking for your username and password.
Username: leave blank
Password: admin
hit enter

You are now in your router....

go here and follow steps 4 - 8 and then power cylce as described at the bottom of the page.

Hope that helps, I'm betting thats it.... let me know.
