WEP is user friendly, and has less packet fragmentation and a faster transfer.

If they are wanting on your network to hack your computers and get files form you, then WPA2 is the least of thier worries, thats the easy part, once they crack that then they have to get through any and all firewalls you have set up. If your that concerned that you have data they may want, and are a vulnerable target for a planned attack, then windows firewall is in-suffecient.

For the average user, that does not have military or major corporation files on thier home computer, then WEP, and windows firewall is plenty of a deterant.
Gonna have to disagree - using WEP is just plain dumb when you can use better. And as stated, WPA2 is unbroachable currently without said key. Despite the 'claims' on GeekNet.

User-friendliness ( another term for lazyness) is irrelevant when both alternatives requires point & click setup and a hopefully large cryptic key.

I'll take an unnoticeable slow-down tradeoff for better security. There's too much other overhead/latency involved in a connection for this to matter.

It's a matter of using the best tools at your disposal - there is no such thing as 'good enough'.

I never said I advocated Windows Firewall. It's pretty much useless as well, and again pointless to use when there is a readily available superior product.

ZA Pro is preferable and even the freebie is better. Use the tray applet to kill the internet connection when no actually online. And either store sensitive data offline, or encrypt with BitLocker.

If a neighbour or a driveby uses your connection for, say, kiddie ****, it's the connection's owner that is liable.

Post them up here.
On each box type IPCONFIG /RELEASE, then IPCONFIG /RENEW

MGD, of course WPA2, MAC filtering, etc. is the BEST way, but let's keep this SIMPLE for now till everything is working smoothly. Even if the kiddies get in, what are they gonna do? Windows firewall is adequate behind a router. Motorola cable modems have a standby button - just hit that and the whole connection is cut anyway.

Built, are you sure you have the modem connected to the WAN/Internet port on your router, not one of the numbered ports?

You do not have to clone the MAC - Comcast resets the MAC by powering the modem off for a couple minutes. If your modem is one of those that also handles your phones, you have to pull the battery too. The MAC has to be reset every time you connect the modem to a different device (router or computer).

Should have done that when he rebooted the computers.

I'm guessing DHCP is disabled on one or both or the router isn't assigning IP's.
couple of teh few simple yet over looked settings that annoy common users.

Also

ipconfig /release *con*

ipconfig /release *Con*
... release all matching connection
eg. "Local Area Connection 1" o
"Local Area Connection 2"

on comcast website they claim some of the older servers only allow one mac address and has to be called in and registered or some stupid crap. Use to internet sharing was a no, no unless you bought thier equipment and and paid an additional monthly fee. Especially for cable providers were even more uset at home networking. They looked at it like splitting your cable TV to different TV's in different rooms and only paying the one price. It was considered pirating. Some smaller communities havent updated thier servers since that time.

Good point - if the MAC isn't resetting you have to clone it or call it in.

Sorry I had a family dinner tonight I had to attend.

Ok check this for me....
on the one that says media disconnected......

right click on Network Places
click properties
under "Lan or High-Speed Internet you will see probably 2 connection one will be "Wireless Network Connection" or something like that
Right click on that
Click on properties
under teh general tab in the white box, scrool and you will see "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)
single click ot high light that then click on the properties button.....
Under the general tab in there, make sure there is a dot on "Obtain an IP automatically and Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically.
Click OK
Click Ok again
Close Network Places

restart if it ask you too.

If there was a dot on both and it did not ask you to restart then you klnow nothing got changed, if it does ask you to restart tehn it may have just realized that it was suppose to do those 2 things.....

If you still cant connect, then do this.....

Click start>run
type cmd
and click ok.
Type: ipconfig /flushdns
and press enter
Type: ipconfig /release *con*
and press enter.
Type: icponfig /renew
and press enter.
Type: exit,
press enter,
and see how you're doing...

I know we have done the IP release and IP renew 1/2 a dozen times already, but this time we also cleared the DNS Which is not a normal step that normally you should have to do. But sounds like a dns error and if it was set to Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically, then a DNS maybe stuck and not getting released. had it happen a few times, like 1 out of every 100 or so.

If it's saying media disconnected, the wireless adapter is not working or it's not associated with the router. View available wireless networks - does your SSID show up in the list? Open device manager, is the wireless adapter showing in there WITHOUT a flag?
