Daughter's 1st car 5-6K budget

I've been on this site for about 6 Yrs but I usually don't post much. My daughter will be getting her license soon and I promised I would buy her a car (I wish my parents did ! ) The problem I have is she is too much like me. She is used to riding in either my L or our Stang. In other words she is like her Dad ,a gear head Of course she wants a Stang or Camaro which my parental side is saying "No way". So I need to find something "sporty" but yet somewhat practical for a 1st time driver. Any ideas ???

Why not just look into an older Mustang with an auto??

A fairly stock 99-04 GT with an auto isn't going to run much faster than a mid to high 14, or drop down to a pre-PI 96-98 which would be even slower, or go to a 94-95 with the 5.0 which probably would not get out of the 15's with a 10mph tailwind. Still a sporty car, you can throw exhaust on them to make them sound meaner than they are and they are all over the place and in your budget.

i would say any rear wheel drive car is not a good choice for a girl/ new driver. Odds are she is graduating high school soon and off to college. If she goes to a northeast college there is usually allot of snow

A 98+ Acura Integra is an excellent "sporty" car for a new driver. You can buy one with 60-100k miles for $4500 and up. Just replace the timing belt and water pump and you are good for another 100k miles.

If you want to stick with a domestic, you should be able to find a 2000+ Focus ZX3 for the same money.

How about a nice Gen 1? Equiped with winter duellers, mine made a fine winter driver, as well as a lot of fun in the good weather when I ran the stock tire/wheel setup. Can be had in your price range.

I agree,
Mustangs + Snow = SCARY ****** DEATH RIDE

Ripper you may want to consider leasing her a new Jeep, they have some unfrigging believable deals right now. Life time wrrnty FOR FREE on any vehicle you buy or lease, and monthy payments from 99 - 299.00

Personally I'd like to see a new driver in a SUV for protection, I hope to do that for JR in a few years. Best of Luck

My first car was grandad's rusty 85 Fifth Avenue I built up. If shes a gear head get her a fixer upper. Great learning experience, and a good way to spend time together.

I'd say an older (mid 90's) pickup would be good, though it wouldn't be the most fuel efficient choice. Maybe a Ranger or Explorer.

A v6 Camaro would probably be your best bet since you mentioned she likes Camaros anyway. They're fairly cheap, you can find them everywhere, and they're not all that powerful but still look cool.

you can get an early 2000s cavalier loaded for real cheap with not many miles, and they had some sporty looking packages, not ricer, but like z24 or w/e they had.

Nothing better than a crash course in manual transmission for a rookie driver. Wait, that doesn't sound so good.
