Project 1965 Mustang

As many of you know, I've got a 1965 Mustang 2+2. It's got a 302 transplanted in it with an Elderbrock 600carb, RPM intake, MSD ignition system, with a worn true dual Flowmaster exhaust system. I've got American Racing wheels wrapped in 215/60s and stopping it is a SSBC brake kit front and rear. The car is in pretty good shape but it needs some work. I'm bored with my truck and need a new project for a while.

I'm pretty happy with the exterior of the car. I want to get a new grille for the front, similar to the non-existent grille found in the Shelbys or maybe a billet grille, and maybe some better lighting. I'd like to get rid of the antenna as well.

I want to get some more power out of this car and am open to any and all suggestions. I'm ordering a new aluminum radiator and electric fan this week, hopefully. I was than thinking of doing a full exhaust system. Patriot Ceramic headers, 2.5" tubing into a Magnaflow X-Pipe, into two SLP LoudMouth2 or Borla XR-1 mufflers.

Ugh come on now. I need some real feedback. I've got some money burning a whole into my pocket. I just find myself having a hard time parting with it!

Jbm928 don't waste your time unless you're going to put some input into this thread.

While I think that was the best PMR episode, ever, and ever will be. That doesn't help!

You need a hotter cam. Better heads with a valve train improvements would be nice, too. Pick your cam and heads/valve train upgrades to compliment one another. Your 600 cfm carb is plenty on a street driven 302. Also, Tri-Y style headers work great on the street for small block Fords, and are keeping with the '60's Shelby tradition. The don't give away much if any peak hp to individual tubes, and may perform better at low and mid rpm (where you drive the most).

When choosing a cam, you need to really be honest with what kind of driving you intend to do. A really hot cam is great at the track, but can be hard to live with unless you are willing to put up with its shortcomings.

I had Ford's solid lifter LeMans cam in my '67 fastback for many years (along with 351W heads and many other mods). According to Ford's muscle parts book, that cam added 59 hp over the stock 289 hydraulic cam. At about 3,000 rpm that thing would just leap forward and pull like a bat out of hell until about 6,000 (the bottom end and valve train was upgraded to handle it). But it would not idle below about 1,100 rpm. Sounded bitchen, though.

Stiffer springs, a bigger front sway bar and good shocks will also greatly improve the handling of your '65, and the ride is still fine.

Thank you Dave. I didn't build the car but bought it this way other than more of the modifications.

I've got some Blue shocks on the car, you know what they are? Can you recommend something? . . as well as the sway bar and shocks? I'm having trouble finding a good website. The car is going to be mainly driven on the street with an occasional track appearance. I'd like it to be as fast as I can but still streetable. Can you point me into the right direction as far as a cam and heads? What size tubing do you think I should run? Most of the headers are 2.5" so I was thinking 2.5" so it wouldn't bottleneck right there but I could be wrong.

Awwww, it would be hick, like Extreme Dukes of Hazzard, but with a Stang instead of a Mopar.

I kinda like the suggested idea of a kick azz suspension. Make that bish fun to drive on windy/curvy roads instead of a PITA.

I agree with you, not cosmetic stuff. Im not really a Stang fan, but that thing looks pretty sweet.

But I think your headed in a good direction with some of the things you listed. Make it fast, and even better if it can handle like its on rails, not like its a 65 Stang.

I wish I would of built the car because I've got no idea what type of suspension set-up I'm running. I've already got a sway bar up front, I'll have to measure it. I'm thinking of doing some KYB shocks on all four corners. Too much stuff. .

This will only gain you HP in the ricer community, but that car is just screaming out for a wide body kit.

Thumper, wasn't the Shelby grill just the mesh without the corral and bars? Thats how Im running mine right now. You use the little bottom piece off a 66 grill to fill the gap at the bottom, after you remove the corral.
