Yeah, I'm not the Road Warrior I used to be. I have to get psyched-up mentally to hit the road now. That little 6-hour drive from Dallas to Waterproof, LA kicks my butt now. My **** is dragging, just to make it to the half-way point (Shreveport). Once I get there though, get out, stretch my legs, get a tall fontain drink with the crushed ice, and a pack of lemon cookies- I'm ready to roll after that.

The first leg of the trip is the worse leg for me.

Back in the day, I used to drive that far (400 miles) without even stopping to take a pee break, get food, gas or anything...

And, did most of those long ****-drives without (drumroll).

A cell phone.

We got our first celly, (A Motorola 3-watt bag phone) in 1994- which we had I.C.o.E. on that long trip from La. to Ca..

I do that atleast once every week or two for work.
That is just a casual drive.

The middle 1/3 is probably the worst for me.
The first third I'm still close enough to home that it would pay to go back if I wanted, middle 1/3 It dont matter which way you go it's about the same distance to go on as it is to trun around. The last 1/3 I'm in the clear, no turning back now, I'm almost there, start getting a little excited.

I divide mine into quarters, and the feelings are a little different.

First 1/4th I'm like:
  • Damn, I don't feel like doing this.
  • I'm sleepy.
  • Why are speed limits so low?
  • Did I forget anything?

1/2:
  • I wish I didn't have to do this.
  • Only ___ miles to go, to the half-way point.
  • Oh snap! 85 MPH! I'd better slow down, and put the cruise control on.
  • Well, if I forgot anything, I'm not going back for it.

3/4ths:
  • Alright, I'm feeling good now.
  • Half-way there.
  • I got my soda, ice to crunch on later, I'm good.
  • Oh snap! 95 MPH! I'd better slow down, and put the cruise control on.
  • Hmm, should I stop in Lindale, TX at the big Texaco (Chevron) at mile marker 556?

4/4ths:
  • Alright, les than 100 miles to go; set the cruise to 72, I'll be there in less than 90 minutes.
  • Well, if I put it on 80, I can be there in 75 minutes.
  • Nah, better leave it on 72, and just get there when you get there.
  • I coudl drive like this all day...

When wifey & I got married, we took 7 weeks off and drove to Dawson City, then Skagway & Juneau, and straight down to Vancouver and home.

I kept a detailed log of exactly where we went, where I filled the tank, how much it cost, the whole 9 yards.

I put on just over 10,000 miles. The route planner states 8,800 miles, but with the running around in each location, you do put on a little extra being a good tourist.

Next month we'll be heading to PEI again, almost 1,000 miles from here.
For many years I could do the entire shot non-stop by myself, not anymore though. After 5 hours of driving, I'm in the back of the camper snoring like a baby bear.

Approx 26 hours roughly 2200Km. Just outside of Toronto to just north to Thunder Bay, Ontario. What a very long and very boring trip. Nothing but trees and lakes. Hwy 11 is lonesome hwy.

For the metric impaired, 2200 km, is 1,367 miles.
I had to sit and think about it for a minute.

I did the Alaska to Vegas route three times. Twice going north and once coming south. The trip was right around 3350 miles each way. The last time we ran it, my brother and I drove pretty much non-stop and made it in 3&1/2 days pulling a 7,000 pound trailer. The first week I had my F150 I drove to Denver from Vegas and put 1500 miles on it. I did that twice. I also did some marathon runs up to Whipple in Fresno which was 400 miles each way. I'd leave early, do my business at Whipple and haul tail back to Vegas. 800 miles and a 6 hour day with the truck in the shop was a bit much.

Now these 350 mile jaunts to Anchorage or Valdez from Fairbanks don't seem as bad as they used to.

Not sure on the distance but once did a snowbaord trip that took us all over Europe for two weeks. Mainly Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. We were there working and our product was delayed so we loaded up the rental car and tried to hit every slope we could. We didn't log anything or keep track but we drove alot, drank alot, and did alot of other things that shouldnt be mentioned....but when in Rome!
Another good post by Hersh!

NYC to ST. Louis. Spent a couple days in St. Louis and then drove down to Orlando, FL.

1964 miles

If you include the trip from Orlando back to NYC it was 3051 total miles
