wow... I am slow today. I finally grasped the concept of the plane one (it also helped I read lightning_r's response in the original thread...

First off. If the plane moves because if its propellers or jet engine, it is impossible for the conveyor to keep up. What really affects the plane taking off. The plane is going to take off no matter what direction its landing gear is turning or how fast. A plane uses air to create horizontal movement. Air alone is what gets the plane going and keeps it in the air. The air is not moving in this example. If the plane were in a wind tunnel, the plane would remain stationary. But since only the conveyor is moving, the plane will take off just like any other day on any other runway. The plane will still take off at the same air speed no matter what the ground is doing.

So in this example. Yes, the plane will take off. The only difference from this conveyor belt runway and a normal runway is that the wheels on the plane will be turning twice as fast to keep up with the conveyor belt, but the plane will do the same air speed as normal.

Ok if you insist......

The Mittellandkanal' is a system of artificial water ways, that connect the western part of Germany with the East. You can travel by boat from the river Rhien to the Havel, on to Berlin and the Baltic Sea. The system is so level that it only requires three locks for it's entire length. It also crosses the rivers Weser & Elbe, with a connection to the Elbe itself. This photo was taken on opening day, in the city of Madeberg, near berlin. Photo & artical by Hubert Latzel.

The engineering question is:
If a ship at 1/2 capacity goes over and weighs 51,762 lbs with it's passengers.
And a second ship at full capacity is behind and weighs 75,489 lbs with it's passengers.
How much more does the bridge way when the second ship is on it.

You know vectors? heres an old one, but its the only thing i can remember at 10 midnight.

there are two mag-lev trains, train 1 is traveling 55mph at 60* to the northeast and is 60miles away from point A
train 2 si traveling south at 75mph and is 90 miles away from point A

the wind at point A is a steady 5mph north.
which direction will the smoke be blowing from train 1 as it nears point A?

Hehehe but well see how many will fall for it.
Dang your right, I had never read one of the emails, I've always just clicked on the link. I didn't realise there was a transcript enclosed.....

The engineering question is:
Ii a 1/2 empty boat goes over and weighs 51,762 lbs with it's passengers.
And a fully loaded boat behind it comes through and weighs 75,489 lbs with it's passengers.
How much more does the bridge way when the second boat passes.
bridge weighs the same

The train and smoke question... I started to answer until I realized something about magnets

that one is easy
and i never knew that existed, very interesting and nicely engineered structure. (i mean the waterways, not your post ) i may have to go read up on that.

back in the 7th grade our math teacher gave us a problem that was a page long and he said we could use calculators and being a full page we were all taking a long time but one kid was done in about 2 minutes and none of us could figure out how he did it until we got further down and noticed one of the last things was multiplying by zero

Mag-lev trains don't have smoke.

Your lost in a forest. Its really cold. You come up on a cabin. Inside the cabin is a wood burning stove, a kerosene lamp, and a oil heater. You only have one match.

Which do you light first?
