HAHA

Its easy to see the plane take off, and if anyone reads the original post they will quickly see why.

yah its kinda a poorly worded "trick" question

Also wasnt clear in the OP which dirrection the tread mill was going, maybe the plane is going with the tread mill, and no thrust is needed

Re: the edit I made, was to clear up any confusion... you replied before I could post the edit.. is there anything else that was poorly worded? (The direction of the treadmill was assumed... I didn't think anyone would figure differently)

Repost, we have been through this before.... answer is yes it will.

Assuming you could run 200 mph....
Strap a jet pack to your back that will push you 100 mph.
Stand on a tread mill and turn the treadmill on 100 mph then turn on the jet pack. Are you going to stay in place?

No you will be running 200 mph and the jet pack and you will be moving at a ground speed of 100 mph.

Haha we had a HUGE discussion on this question over on blazinlow.com a year or so ago.
we concluded that the plane would fly and that it wouldnt, and gave very interesting scientific mumbojumbo to back each one.

But heres a good one for you smarter guys.

Three sailors get stranded on a small island, and have to wait for a night to get their boat fixed. They check in at a local motel.
they only have one vacancy, and its got 2 single beds. Being as tired as they were they decided they dont care, and will draw straws to see who sleeps on the floor. They each pay ten bucks for the room and head off to rest.
Upon seeing thier lowered spirits the manager tells a young bellhop to retrieve a cot for the unlucky person. He also gives him 5 dollars to return to the sailors for their inconvenience.

On the way to the room, the boy thinks, How will 3 guys evenly divide 5 dollars? being the little scoundrel that he was, he pockets 2 bucks and leaves three so that the sailors can divide it up evenly.

he wakes them and gives them the cot, and also the three dollars.
the sailors, happy to only pay 9 bucks a peice cheerfully go back to bed.

10X3=30
but the sailors got back 1 dollar each, that means they only paid 9 each.

9X3=27 and the boy pocketed 2
27+2=29
where did the other dollar go?

you spoiled it,
you know how many people actually try very hard to question the math on that? its pretty funny to read people explain why the math is wrong.

the airplane one is really simple.

ground speed has nothing to do with an airplane flying.

an airplane is propelled forward by the thrust on its engines, NOT by the wheels on the ground.

the plane will fly, as it is pushed forward by the air, not the ground or treadmill acting in reverse of the forward movement.

the only thing the treadmill will do is make the wheels on the landing gear travel insanely fast as the plane moves forward

think of it this way, if you go dyno your truck, it is tie strapped to the dyno/ground
the car thinks its traveling at 100+ but its actually sitting still.

the plane is the exact opposite, the treadmill tries to keep it from going forward, but it still moves because its using the air to propel itself not the ground

and
pss, everyone on this thread already got the solution in their inbox if they were subscribed.
Hehehe but well see how many will fall for it.
