If your just looking for restaurants & the like, you gotta go to Hickory Park. While it's definately not the best bbq around, it's the best Iowa can offer. Another favorite of mine is Wallaby's. IWhenever I'm in Ames, I always stop in for a brew at Welch Ave. Station in Campustown. Not sure why, but I've always liked that place, even more now that I'm "old".
I graduated from ISU in 1999, went back a few months ago to witness the 'clones get their butts clobbered (again) out in Jack Trice Stadium. The town has really grown over the past few years.
Oh, and if your trollin' for poon, ISU isn't exactly dripping with it - but it's not too bad. Met my (now) wife there.
Enjoy the trip. Bring your coat, it'll be cold.
