Red face Dell laptop help

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 (yes I know it's old but it still works for me :o ). Anywho, the keyboard went out on me; My question is, is it just a matter of replacing the keyboard or is it something else (like the software)? Is there any way to check? btw, I'm on the laptop right now w/ a regular keyboard from my desktop plugged in and the touchpad/mouse buttons work. Any help would be appreciated.

So that should fix it?

The fact that I'm able to plug in an external keyboard and have it work means it's not the software, right?

The thing was working one minute and not the next.

Thanks for your help.

OK lets start over...so none of your keys on the laptop are working? Im not sure if Ive seen all the keys go out at one time but not saying it couldnt happen and still be the keyboard. I would feel better if only some keys went out to be the keyboard. Reason being it could be something on the board thats went out not letting the keyboard work. Again Im guessing on that and still think replacing the keyboard would fix it. Have you tried rebooting your laptop? If not please do. Also I would take the keyboard apart and make sure everything looks plugged in all the way and reseat the connection. The turn it on again. When you hit any of the keys on the board does it make a beeping sound or any response at all?

Good Luck!

Correct, none of the keys work. The only buttons working are the power, touchpad, and the 2 "mouse" buttons. I've rebooted it 4 times already with no luck. No beeping or any type of response when hitting the keys.

Tomorrow I'll crack it open and take a look.

Mine went out on me (Inspiron 9200). I called Dell about it because mine is still under warranty. The guy I spoke with ask me to pop the trim panel off right above the keyboard. Then to take the two keyboard mounting screws out and check the connector. I found mine connector came out. After I plugged it back in it's been working great. Check it, if that's not it, at least there cheap and easy to replace.

Sweet!!! I did that real quick and bammm!!! It worked. Thanks.

But I must have wiggled something else loose now cause it won't acknowledge the AC cord as being plugged in. Stand back, I'm going in again.

When that happened to mine the mother board had to be replaced. That 100 extended 4 year warranty I bought was well worth it. I've also had a fan and hard drive replaced.
